Study finds constipation is a significant risk factor for major cardiac events
Medical Xpress / Monash University / American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology ^ | Aug. 19, 2024 | Silvia Dropulich / Tenghao Zheng et al

An international study has found a surprising connection between constipation and an increased risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE), including heart attacks, strokes and heart failure.

The study analyzed data from over 400,000 participants in the UK Biobank.

The research team analyzed data from 408,354 individuals, identifying 23,814 cases of constipation.

The findings showed that individuals suffering from constipation were more than twice as likely to suffer from a major cardiac event as those without constipation.

Moreover, the study highlighted a particularly concerning link between constipation and hypertension.

Hypertensive individuals who also suffered from constipation were found to have a 34% increased risk of subsequent cardiac events compared to those with hypertension alone.

"Our research suggests that constipation may exacerbate the cardiovascular risks associated with high blood pressure, further increasing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes," Professor Marques said.

In addition to these epidemiological findings, the study also explored the genetic links between constipation and cardiovascular disease.

"Positive genetic correlations were identified between constipation and various forms of MACE, indicating that shared genetic factors may underlie both conditions. This discovery opens new avenues for research into the underlying mechanisms that connect gut health and heart health," Dr. Leticia Camargo Tavares, co-first author of the study, explained.

"The implications of this study are far-reaching," Professor Marques said.

"With constipation affecting an estimated 14% of the global population, particularly older adults and women, these findings suggest that a significant portion of the population may be at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to their bowel health," she said.

The study authors emphasized the need for further research to explore the causal relationship between constipation and MACE and to identify the specific biological pathways involved. One of these mechanisms may be via a "leaky gut."

Both environmental / lifestyle and genetic ties were found between constipation and cardio issues.

You can prevent your environmental / lifestyle issues, even if your genetic concerns can’t be reversed. Do what you can.

You know that is a good point. Drug addicts. I was thinking constipation, lots of remedies but when you are a drug addict it’s a big problem.

Especially opioid addicts, which Elvis was. He had severe constipation and a massively enlarged colon.

“According to Dr. Nick, the autopsy revealed that Presley’s colon was 5 to 6 inches in diameter (whereas the normal width is 2 to 3 inches) and instead of being the standard 4 to 5 feet long, his colon was 8 to 9 feet in length”

My daughter is a paramedic. Finding a large man on the toilet with a heart attack is a one or two times a month thing. They are usually dead on the scene.

My father had a simple way of putting it: “If you don’t eat, you don’t shit, and if you don’t shit, you die.”

One of the treatments for diarrhea was opiates because they will plug you up. So if someone abuses opiates they are liable to get constipated.

I read something about the vagus(sp) nerve that gets triggered when bowels are in movement and it causes a major drop in blood pressure or some dang weird thing like that. People found dead on the toilet is actually a thing. How friggn weird is that!

I understand why. Constipation, people strain to push. Your blood pressure goes up the harder you strain. Stresses your system. You have any problem thats near a critical issue, could be enough to make it happen.
