Cannabis use tied to head and neck cancer
Medical Xpress / Univ of Southern California / JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery ^ | Aug. 8, 2024 | Gallagher, T.J. et al

A study suggests that cannabis, the most commonly used illicit substance worldwide, is associated with an increased occurrence of head and neck cancer.

A large, multicenter study revealed that adults with cannabis dependence, known as cannabis use disorder, are 3.5 to 5 times more likely to develop head and neck cancer than those who do not use the substance.

Head and neck cancer, the sixth most common cancer in the world, includes several cancers, including cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, oropharynx (tongue and tonsils and back wall of the throat) and adjacent salivary glands.

The researchers discovered that those with cannabis use disorder had higher rates of all types of head and neck cancers. They also found that the prevalence of head and neck cancer among those with cannabis use disorder was independent of other factors, such as age, gender and ethnicity. Alcohol and tobacco use, which have been associated with head and neck cancer, also did not play a role in the findings.

Additionally, research has shown that tobacco smoke contains numerous chemicals that cause DNA damage and inflammation to the area, which, if unchecked, can lead to cancer, and they speculate that cannabis smoke may cause similar harm.

In fact, there is some evidence, Kokot theorizes, that the smoke from cannabis may even be worse than tobacco smoke.

"Cannabis smoking is typically unfiltered and involves deeper inhalation compared to tobacco," he said. "Additionally, cannabis burns at a higher temperature than tobacco, increasing the risk of cancer-causing inflammation."

To reach their conclusions, the researchers compiled 20 years of data through a health research network of 64 health care organizations that accounted for more than 90 million individuals. They tracked cancer cases from one to five years of cannabis use.

“Most cases of HNC are linked exclusively to tobacco and alcohol.”
^

My late neighbor would attest to that.

Never ceasing tobacco and alcohol use, he underwent annual surgeries until he died.

However, he’d also consumed “weed” during his college years.

As for the four known “tokers” of my acquaintance, ALL have passed away...

I remember a news article showing “moobs” on Puerto Rican teens.

The cause back then (1970s) was estrogen-related hormones inoculated into cattle.

Correct! And smoking marijuana will cause the deaf to hear, the blind to see, the lame to walk, and the dead to come alive.

The point I was trying to make is that 3X-5X times a very small number of HNC victims is still a very small number.

Most marijuana smokers quit before age 40 and have completely normal lives.

Somehow, the only marijuana smokers that Free Republic knows about are zonked out lay abouts.

I have known at least a dozen well paid professionals or business owners who smoked marijuana after work or on weekends.

Speaking personally, the world would be a safer and healthier place if alcohol and tobacco were against the law.

But, we tried that before, and that did not work, either.

Careful. You speak blasphemy to those here on FR that want to control people almost as much as does the Left.

Whatever happened to Freedom went out the window when the topic of pot comes up to some...

It’s likely from the pesticides used in growing marijuana.

“I have known at least a dozen well paid professionals or business owners who smoked marijuana after work or on weekends.”

Will we ever know if your “paid professionals” achieved their PERSONAL MAXIMUM?

I witnessed a bank employee taking a noontime “Marijuana break”. Were his customers getting his full attention?

”…. have passed away...”

.

A former co-worker of mine passed away earlier this year of tongue, mouth, & throat cancer.
He was in his mid 60s.
He used to brag about how much pot he smoked.

Not too good way to go, but at least it was fairly fast. Just a few months.

there is nothing wrong with smoking it, I do it once a week and I make six figures a year doing almost nothing sitting at home looking at the pc screen.

Ronald Reagan is the best thing ever happened in this country.

I’m actually glad researches are being done on this so we know more about the harmful effects.

people who uses it as a gateway to something else harsher are just weak minded fools and deserves to die on the streets. They just can’t afford this kind of lifestyle.

Cannabis smoking appears to increase head and neck cancers 3.5X - 5X.

“[for] adults with cannabis dependence, known as cannabis use disorder”

These aren’t your usual recreational pot smokers.
