Tech giant among missing after luxury yacht sinks in storm off Sicily

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and several other people were among those missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among the six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when...a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body has been recovered, and police divers were trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello, near Palermo, where it had been anchored.

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

The Bayesian was known for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast, one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites list it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

I had the fortune of being up on the bridge of an aircraft carrier while transitting the Straights of Messina, quite a view from up there.

>>What is the probability that a freak storm would hit the Bayesian”

Perhaps, more relevant is: “What is the likelihood given the prior probability?”

He was lashed to the mast and warned his crew to put wax in their ears, but no....they just had to hear the sirens.

Would be better if a second variable was also used,
What are the odds that a freak storm would hit the Bayesian while his wife was not on board?

Looks like his ship was not going in the same direction as the other Immobiliare vessels. (GF III reference)

"What is the probability that a freak storm would hit the Bayesian”

Are you referring to prior or posterior probability?

Difficult to fake a tornado I would think.

Or perhaps it was a freak accident and the opportunity was seized.

Non but a waterspout is sort of like a water tornado and the life preservers would have little help. Perhaps to bring the bodies to the surface after?

Oh heck, I didn’t see a water spout so someone could say this happened and I would not know one way or the other. There is very little that can’t be faked or lied about anymore.

Probability equation is simply the attempt to prove one of the greatest philosophers in Mr. Murphy who simply articulated a simple adage.
