Inside the Worst Three Weeks of Donald Trump’s 2024 Campaign
The New York Times ^ | Aug. 10, 2024, 5:04 a.m. ET | Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan

People around the former and would-be president see a candidate knocked off his bearings, disoriented by his new contest with Kamala Harris and unsure of how to take her on.

The Aug. 2 dinner at the Bridgehampton, N.Y., home of Howard Lutnick, the Cantor Fitzgerald chief executive, was a high-powered affair. Among the roughly 130 people who dined under an air-conditioned tent were some of Donald Trump’s wealthiest supporters, including the billionaire hedge-fund financier Bill Ackman, who sat next to the former president, and Omeed Malik, the president of another fund, 1789 Capital.

Some guests hoped Mr. Trump would signal that he was recalibrating after a series of damaging mistakes. He did not.

Before the dinner, answering a question that voiced concerns about the upcoming election during a small round-table discussion inside Mr. Lutnick’s house, Mr. Trump said, “We’ve got to stop the steal,” reviving yet again his false claims about the 2020 election — claims that his advisers have urged him to drop because they don’t help him with swing voters.

According to two people present, Mr. Trump himself also brought up his remark, made two days earlier at a gathering of the National Association of Black Journalists, in which he had questioned Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial identity.

It had been a display of flagrant race-baiting that was egregious even by Mr. Trump’s standards, and it instantly reprogrammed America’s TV news chyrons: He falsely claimed that Ms. Harris had only recently decided to identify as Black for political purposes.

But Mr. Trump showed no regret. “I think I was right,” he told the rattled donors that Friday night.

Trump not doing daily rallys is actually s good sign to me. It says they understand that rallys alone isnt going to do this. They are using resources better if they are focusing on GOTV and harvesting.

2024 will probably be stolen as well. Not having most od the governorships and having RINOs blocking reforme in state houses makes it all the more likely. I’ve remained cautious about being overly optimistic about the election. 2016 was almost like divine intervention. May need that again to win but I still push everyone to do the work. Register all you can.

If Trump can get them to debate I’ll be more confident but I think they may be able to just run out the clock on vetting their ticket with the medias support.

Didn't they all die in that thing 20 years ago?

They’ve effectively “disappeared” the attempt by the Democrat Party to murder President Trump!

It’s all over the media. The Alphabets don’t have the exclusive power they just had. Trump is framing this Election as common sence vs crazyness.

2016 was almost like divine intervention.

As was President Trump's survival of the Democrat assassination attempt that they pretend never happened.

The dog that never barked. We know what that means.

Well then it was stupid for The Hoe to be putting ads on during baseball games. The guys got up and got a beer and took a leak during her ads.

Kamala's campaign coffers are flooded with money. She can throw ads wherever she wants. She's running ads in North Georgia right now and that's MTG territory.

There were ads in newspapers looking to hire people for her rally in AZ.

Yep! And do you know what those people were doing? Making sure everyone at her rally is registered to vote.

Your problems is that you give too much credence to that woman and that rubber mouth clown Walz.

Your problem is you still think it's July 18th and Trump is on a glide path to >400 electoral votes and the popular vote. It isn't and he's not.

There are many many women who are not voting for Kamala so cut it out.

Kamala Harris will earn the votes of 60% of Americans with college degrees, 65% of unmarried females, and 98% of black females. These are HIGH TURNOUT voters! Trump is doing great with working class white men and reasonably well with working class Latino and black men. His problem is these are LOW TURNOUT voters.

Does he have a ground game? Is he paying people $40/hr to register voters and harvest mail-in ballots? And if not, why not?

I agree with the first part. Rallies are a poor ROI. They're expensive and for Trump, his rallies have become something of a Grateful Dead tour. It's mostly the same people who follow him around from place to place.

As to your second part, I hope this is true.

“ Looked like Trump’s mistake was to debate Biden in June. That was bait.”

Trumps mistake was to ever take the idea that the Democrats would ever nominate Biden. He built a fantasy campaign around an obvious trap.

He must have thought that the powers that be would not force Biden out.

I wouldn’t care if he did. I’d accept his 2028 bid assuming Trump won because of that. Repukes wouldn’t do that though

I think you’re wrong. They were ablento remove a President from contention in 3 weeks. All they had to do was cover him and all they had to do to protect was not cover him. You’re seeing the same with with The Ugandan Giant (Kamala). If they ever wanted her gone they can get her out in less time than they got Biden out. The Presidency is a joke in the hands of fools with no mandate and who get in by being proped up.
