Donovan could rock.
:^) OTOH, he also wrote crap like “Mellow Yellow”.
I’ve always loved The Bobs’ version of “First There Is a Mountain”, which is an obvious stoner anthem. :^)

Try the Allman Brothers instrumental jam— Mountain Jam. It’s way better than freakin’ donovan. Sheesh.
That’s always been one of my favorite Donovan songs.
I even like the first part, the spoken word storytelling.
His voice is at once laconic and compelling.
A lulling interlude into a dreamworld of open spaces, merging colors and unknown dangers.
Jennifer Jupiter = Another gem, this time using flutes and oboe.
His sound is his signature, which comes in part to the amp he and brit prefence settings.
I am amazed everytime I see guitar music with the amp style, effects, EQ and mode setup that replicates the original artists sound.

Several weeks before the Musical Storytellers: A Memorial for Glenn Cornick event, I had the opportunity to meet with Ian Anderson in Southern California before one of his shows to record a memorial tribute to my father. Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly blown away by the kindness Ian exhibited allowing me to video tape him remembering my father. Ian and I were able to share nearly an hour of memories and stories that allowed me to learn and understand more of my father. Here is a shortened version of our conversation.Ian Anderson: Remembering Glenn Cornick | 7:40

I’ve got it on vinyl (all of one side, part of another), and I’ve always skipped it because frankly it kinda sucks, even from the standpoint of long aimless jams.
I rank JJ right down there with Mellow Yellow.
Which was the point- an aimless jam of a really stupid song to begin with. A really stupid song from a long forgotton nobody “writer”.
My first experience of it was on the AOR station in Grand Rapids, whew, 50 or so years ago. It has an unfinished feel, which may stem from the fact that the actual song is just a short chorus over and over, and yet, I’ve always found it compelling.
