The Winter Olympics are officially coming back to Utah. A boisterous crowd of about 2,000 people erupted into jubilation as International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach announced the vote Wednesday to award Salt Lake City the 2034 Winter Olympics during a meeting in Paris ahead of the 2024 Olympics. Some launched fireworks they brought with them in the morning, while the crowd stuck around to view an Olympic-themed drone show over the Salt Lake City-County Building. It marks just the fifth time that the United States has hosted the Winter Olympics and the future event will be the first on U.S. soil since Salt Lake City hosted it in 2002.

Can Mittens Romney carry the Olympic torch, down the ski slope ala the Wide World of Sports introductory film? It would improve the ratings greatly.
In 1 year: “The budgets will be announced.”
In 2 Years: “Budgets will have to be adjusted to reflect decay in old venues.”
In 3 years: “The State will have to increase their funding”
In 6 years: “Cost overruns amount to hundred of millions”
In 10 years: “Olympics will lose $1 B dollars because of high costs.”
In 2034: “OIympic ratings hit new low as Tom Richard’s wins Women’s Figure Skating.”
Of course, we can adjust the dollars due to the inflation that will remain high while the budget deficit soars.
In recent years fewer places have even been putting in bids to host the games, because of costs and problems involved with the host cities.
I wonder how much Salt Lake and the state of Utah are going to have to pay to subsidize these games.

I certainly don’t.
An idea that has been around for quite a while is to have all countries pitch in and build a summer Olympic compound in Greece. It would host the summer Olympics every four years and then be a tourist destination and training facility in the off years. Any country that sends a team to the Olympics has to pay a small fee each year for upkeep.
A small annual fee ($1-2mm ??) would not break the bank for anyone.
