Two new Barbie dolls with disabilities are being released on Tuesday, July 23, as part of an expansion of the Barbie Fashionistas line, Mattel announced in a news release.
The new dolls, known as "Blind Barbie" and the "Black Barbie doll with Down syndrome," were each developed in partnership with nonprofit organizations.
"We recognize that Barbie is much more than just a doll. She represents self-expression and can create a sense of belonging," Krista Berger, senior vice president of Barbie and global head of dolls for Mattel, said in a statement provided to FOX Business.

I really do not have a problem with this. It may not be so much for a kid who is blind or has Downs Syndrome themselves, but then a kid girl with Down’s might want a doll that looks at least somewhat like themselves (but let’s face it - no Barbie doll is an accurate representation of any living person), it might also be because that the girl that has a sister or aunt, cousin, friend, etc. who is blind or had DS.
They might want to play with dolls that not only look like themselves, but also look like the people they know.
I remember when my niece’s triplet girls first started playing with dolls, first baby dolls and then eventually Barbies. The girls were looking at the Toys R Us before Christmas catalogue one year, putting together their Santa list, when one of them picked out a Black Barbie.
Her mom asked why she picked out that particular Barbie, she told her mom it was because it looked like her mom’s best friend, who happened to be a kind, loving, committed Christian, and beautiful Black woman who my niece had been best friends with for most of her life.
Her daughter greatly admired her mother’s friend.
When I was a kid, I had a “Midge” doll. She was Barbie’s friend, and compared to Barbie, she was homely.

I also had a midge doll. I can still remember the hair . It was not a cute hair flip one. I don’t know what kind of hair style you call it but not a look little girls want.
