The irony is that the same vulcanism that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum was elemental in the building of the classic Roman civilization. The famous and indispensable Roman concrete relied on “tufa” (tuff) for an aggregate, and tuff is formed when ash is ejected in volcanic eruption, falls to earth and lithifies. The Colosseum, the Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo and about a gazillion other Roman structures were made using tuff, and scoria, and other pyroclastic materials.
Vulcan giveth and Vulcan taketh away. Is it any wonder the Romans made him a god?
