The GOP Is Pat Buchanan’s Party Now
The Nation ^ | 7/19/2024 | Lehmann

…But as the 2024 Republican National Convention in the garrison state of downtown Milwaukee winds down, a more definitive transformation of the Trumpist creed is under way, chiefly in the selection of Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as Trump’s running mate.

Trump’s own listless, meandering, and astoundingly long acceptance speech on the convention’s last night only made it all the more clear that the MAGA torch is being passed to a more focused and clear-eyed generation of ideologues, with Vance as their de facto leader. But the party’s fulsome embrace of a blood-and-soil brand of economic nationalism, as epitomized by Vance’s speech before the convention on Wednesday, shows that it’s Pat Buchanan who is the ideological forefather of the 21st-century Republican Party.

Buchanan, of course, was the former Nixon speechwriter who harnessed the restive white-nationalist animal spirits of the conservative movement for his insurgent presidential campaigns in 1992 and ’96. Among other things, Buchanan’s presidential runs launched the culture wars, as both an expression and an organizing principle of conservative mass politics. His fiery denunciations of waves of corporate downsizing at the behest of the financial industry presaged the Trump GOP’s mythical, but tirelessly promoted, alignment with the interests of the white working class. Even his paleocon broadsides against the Israel lobby looked ahead to the open America First sympathies of the Trump movement leadership. For all the reservoirs of digital ink spilled on the hallowed self-made origins of Vance’s unique American success story, the Hillbilly Elegy author is plainly the spiritual offspring of the Buchanan movement.

Yep. I thunk it up. I was also the first to coin “Vichy Republicans” and “First Wookie” which has been repeated by right wing pundits. FR is a great breeding ground for creative but alienated right wingers.

I didn’t know Buchanan was still alive. Pat was severely damaged by Willian F. Buckley who labeled him an anti Semite. He didn’t deserve to be expelled from conservatism because of that policy difference. I would love to see Trump acknowledge his contribution though.

You are correct. Pat is no longer turning out opinion pieces and was a bit foggy at his last public event a few years ago.

“The GOP Is Pat Buchanan’s Party Now”

When did the GOP become Anti-Israel?

Pat was severely damaged by Willian F. Buckley who labeled him an anti Semite.

WFB didn't quite label him an Anti-Semite. He thought that Pat was dancing to close to the fire. He was rougher on the great and good Joe Sobran.

Pat’s problem was that he was anti-Israel, and when that started coming out, he nose-dived, as Republicans have been and still are pro-Israel.

But on other stuff, mainly the exporting of our industrial base, he was right, but like just about all populists, he still didn’t want to go after the labor unions, who were INSTRUMENTAL in making it next to impossible to manufacture in the US, in the first place. Perhaps he would have gone after them, once he saw the HUGE damage they would do to the country when imports, outsourcing, and immigration were restricted...but he wasn’t talking that way at the time, so he was only halfway there, and thus didn’t have a coherent plan.

Well, God bless him. I do believe he was very important to changing mainstream American conservatism away from embracing not so “free trade”, interventionism, open borders, etc. There are still country club Republican dead-enders, and the battle goes on. But at least among Republicans, populist conservatism is now the mainstream. And Pat Buchanan was certainly an important force to laying the foundation for that evolution.

Back when Pat Buchanan was running, I will always remember what he said needed to be done with the U.N. Pat seemed like real “go-getter” to me.

Sarcasm? Not a bit

Read about when the Ukes adopted the “ blood and soil” flags for their “ nationalist” nazi paramilitary and military units, after allying with German nazis in WW2. Racial purification is a component of developing a pure Ukrainian identity removed from racial “inferiors”, including slavs like Poles ….and Russians. A major reason the Uke nationalist leadership chose to ally with Germany to fight the Red Army ( and Jews, another inferior racial group)…A better outcome for them if Hitler won.

Why Zelensky a Jew is president…another complicated tale. Certain Jews have always been useful to people who use them for control

Its ironic that the so-called “ antifascist” Antifa also parades the colors associated with fascist nationalism….which is what the left keeps tying to MAGA patriotism and love for America…as “ fash”, or “ fascism”

This “ Nation” writer knew what he was doing to use that phrase.

You tagged the wrong post.
My comment was directed at the Nation associating Buchanan and the GOP with “ blood and soil” nationalism.

The allusion to fascism was clear to me.

For me, the first time I ever heard a dire and terrifying warning about how political correctness would ruin America was from Buchanan. It’s been a long time since than. Can’t even recall when, but it was him.

DO get this correct - 1992 saw BILL CLINTON sworn in as President for the first of TWO terms (8 years) - NOT Bush.
The Clinton’s began the big decline of which we see results today. It could be argued that the decline started with the assassination of JFK back in 1963.

Of course, I’d guess everyone on FR knows that.

I was speaking of the Republican primaries which led to a candidate, Bush.
