Ranked: The Most Reliable Car Brands in the U.S.
Visual Capitalist ^ | 07/19/2024 | Marcus Lu and Sam Parker

Reliability is one of the most important aspects to consider when buying a new vehicle, especially as cars become ever more technologically complex...

In this graphic, Visual Capitalist's Marcus Lu visualizes the results of J.D. Powerโ€™s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which ranked automakers by the number of problems per 100 vehicles (PP100).

Data and Methodology

To come up with this ranking, J.D. Power collected responses from 30,595 original owners of 2021 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. Their study was fielded from August to November 2023, and covers nine categories of problems:

The data shown in this infographic is also listed in table below. Note that Tesla was not included because it did not meet study award criteria.

BrandProblems per 100 Vehicles
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Lexus135
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Toyota147
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Buick149
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Chevrolet174

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Porsche175
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Mazda185
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Kia187
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช BMW190
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Dodge190
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Jeep190

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Cadillac196
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Hyundai198
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Subaru198
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Nissan199
๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท Genesis200
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Ram201
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ GMC206
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Honda206
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Acura216
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Mercedes-Benz218
๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Infiniti219
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Ford239
๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช Volvo245
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Lincoln251
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Volkswagen267
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Land Rover268
๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช Audi275
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Chrysler310

From this dataset, we can declare Toyota and its luxury arm, Lexus, as the most reliable car brands in the United States.

Compared to the other Japanese duos, Honda and Acura rank a distant 20th and 21st, with 206 and 216 PP100. Meanwhile, Nissan and Infiniti diverge, with the former ranking 16th (199 PP100) and Infiniti at 23rd (219 PP100).

The least reliable automaker in this ranking is Chrysler, which was also the only brand to surpass 300 problems per 100 vehicles. Itโ€™s worthy to note that for the 2021 model year (basis of this study), Chrysler only offered two models: the Pacifica/Voyager minivan, and the 300 sedan.

Infotainment Systems a Major Pain Point

According to J.D. Powerโ€™s study, โ€œInfotainmentโ€ was the most common type of problem experienced by owners, with nearly twice as many problems as the second-highest category, โ€œExteriorโ€.

Within the Infotainment category, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity was a frequent issue, as was built-in voice recognition.

LOL!!

Old Audi still bringing up the rear.

Other than Porsche, sure looks like paying a lot for a status symbol is rather stupid.

Knew I should have bought a Lexus and a Porsche.
What was I thinking?

I just saw this on my Google news feed. Was really shocked that Honda wasn’t as high in the list as I thought it would be.

Don’t see the Smart or the Yugo. Fell off the bottom with “over 1,000” to save room on the chart.

My 1964 Renault Dauphine taught me just about everything that could go wrong with a new car. Even a small hole blown out of the side of a spark plug. Mechanic said “I never saw that one before.” If you didn’t get the steering mechanism greased every three or four months it seized up and sounded like a rusty freight car going to a siding with the train braking loudly, and you had to use all your arm strength to make it move left to right. And in 1964 “We don’t work on foreign cars. We don’t carry parts for foreign cars.” A while later everyone owned foreign cars.

I have driven eight Ford F-150โ€™s since 1989. No problems but tires and brakes. Three Chevy Suburbans since 2001. No problemo.

RE: what did I buy?

A Honda Civic LX sedan which I dearly love. Just right for my needs.

Built in Indiana where my late father was raised.

My Honda is 30 years old. Finally had to out a new timing belt. Aside from consumables, tires, brakes, oil, fluids, nothing has happened to this old car. Looking for an old Toyota pickup if any one knows of one....

Reveal the fact you are secretly eyeing the EV F-150. (Kidding)

EV estimated range 300-350 miles. Not if weather is freezing, or really hot, or rainy and damp. They don’t say but we can ask the stranded drivers as we give them a ride in our gas vehicles.

They say the weight of batteries causes cars and trucks to wear out the suspension and tires quickly.

Maybe the EV F-150 owners should not put any cargo in back.

“Was really shocked that Honda wasnโ€™t as high in the list as I thought it would be.”

Honda reliability has totally collapsed during the last ten years ... Honda autos used to be nearly bulletproof in terms of reliability ...

So looking this they seem to rate non intuitive infotainment system just as importantly as blown engines.

Good. I despise the EVs the Left is trying to force us to use.

Along with destroying our energy of oil and natural gas while we cope with power blackouts like California.

I don’t want a vehicle that Gomer Pyle couldn’t fix up at Wally’s Service Station if needed.
