The family of a 76-year-old Kentucky man was awarded over $2 million for his death from second- and third-degree burns suffered in a scalding hot motel shower where water temperatures reached at least 150 degrees Fahrenheit.
Court documents from the lawsuit alleged that Alex Chronis checked into the Econo Lodge in Erlanger, Kentucky, on Nov. 18, 2021. The next morning, he turned on the shower and was immediately struck by extremely hot water that knocked him to the floor while the water continued to burn him. The two people who were in the motel with Chronis heard his screams and removed him from the tub.

Uhh, every shower I’ve ever seen has this setting where you can actually turn hot water colder. And cold water hotter.

This sounds like the idiots who put McDonalds hot coffee between their legs only to get burned.
Although as I recall Governor Greg Abbott is in a wheelchair today due to scalding hot water from a shower.

that story was also quite underreported...the person nearly died. question is - should McDonald's have been handing out a flimsy cup filled with something that was literally lethal if spilled on you - not merely "hot" that it would cause burns.
Learned something new. I’d heard and read it was hot water requiring skin grafts.
I guess the paralysis deadened nerves to his feet leaving him unable to tell they were scalding.

Sounds like he got in the tub first, then turned the water on. But hot water is not instantaneous. As the temp of the water goes up, you adjust the temp to your liking. If it gets too hot, get out of the tub.
I never get into a shower or tub and turn the water on, especially in a strange, new location.
Maybe this 76 year old had the IQ of a turnip. Or maybe he is physically disabled.

Yeah, it sounds as if he must have been suffering from dementia if he forgot to adjust the water before entering the shower.
That being written, 150F is too hot for a residential application.
Way too hot, yes. I don’t even like ours at 120F. Too easy to get scalded even washing hands or doing a few dishes.
No, the person was in no danger from being scalded on the thighs. My cousin was on the team of lawyers suing McDonalds.
The State of Oregon required at the time that anyone selling “hot” coffee had to dispense it above a certain temperature.
It’s not just laundry. Some plumbers turn the water on very hot in large buildings. They say it’s because lower water temperatures cause legionnaires disease. I’m not saying I’m believing this. Just reporting.

Tubs, showers and bathroom sinks are required to have thermostatic mixing valves (also known as tempering valves or anti-scald valves) to protect users. This man didn't think a motel would hire a non-licensed plumber to do work in the building and paid for it with his life. It's one more sign of the decline into third world lack of standards and enforcement.
The individual who connected the plumbing without the thermostatic valve should be in prison for manslaughter.
My grandfather went the exact same way. RIP.
