ESPYs host Serena Williams and Quinta Brunson took a jab at Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker during the awards ceremony Thursday night.
The moment happened as Williams and Brunson discussed women's sports with Venus Williams at the sports awards show.
"So, go ahead and enjoy women’s sports like you would any other sports, because they are sports," Venus said.
"Except you, Harrison Butker. We don’t need you," Serena quipped.
"At all. Like, ever," Brunson added as the audience laughed.
Butker attended the ESPYs, but the camera did not pan to him to catch his reaction.
The NFL kicker received widespread backlash over his commencement speech in May at Benedictine College when he asserted that one of the "most important" roles for a woman is being a homemaker.
"How many of you are sitting here now, about to cross this stage, and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world," he said during his speech.
"But I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world," Butker said.
Criticism quickly followed, with some graduating students saying his remarks were "uncomfortable" and that it was not the "time and place."
A spokesperson for the NFL told People Magazine that Butker's "views are not those of the NFL as an organization."
Butker said he has no regrets about the comments he made during his speech.
Williams isn't first celebrity to blast Butker during a show. Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder took aim at the kicker during the band's Las Vegas concert in May, saying, "There’s nothing more masculine than a strong man supporting a strong woman.”
Serena Williams is married to a white man.
It’s sad how many Freepers don’t care about Harrison Butker, or his message, it’s just about black people. That had nothing to do with Butker’s message.
vedder is a douche.
~~~
I liked Pearl Jam’s music in the ‘90s, but didn’t they get caught dumping waste out of an RV or tour bus into lake michigan once?
They don’t care. Just like the hypocrites who fly around in private jets to propagandize the harmless molecule CO2 as a cause for climate change, these people are virtue signaling douchƏ-faces.
They all have, or once had, a Cocker Spaniel?
Don’t think PJ did the RV waste thing. That was dave matthews band. More trash.
SERENA cannot get away from being raised in Compton.
If only she knew that most people are not interested in women’s sports and would not be missed by the public if they disappeared from the public stage.
I don’t see how this has to do with Compton. People in Compton are more likely to not care, or agree, with Butker. Her going after him is a rich people or woke people thing.
The Left made it political.
I’m pretty sure he is a rich techie from SF.
“ So you can be a misogynist, rap-loving thug on the gridiron, but if you praise Christ and believe in the teachings of the Bible, you’re not welcome in any circles.”
Jesus Himself said it would be so.
He’s from Brooklyn.
I agree with you about that.
Now that you mention it... I do recall it was DMB.
I don’t mix the two up musically, but you are right, I would put them in a similar box politically. Must be why I mixed them up in this context.
Chicks still go to college to get their MRS. degree. And, not likely to change anytime soon.
He committed heresy against the religions of Feminism. Burn him at the stake!
A few years later, they go for their PhD degree.
That's the "Pretty huge Divorce".
Then how do you explain the fact that over 60% of college students are female, but fewer and fewer women are getting married?
Isn’t Serena Williams the freak who threatened to kill an Asian lineswomen during a match?
