SOCIAL STUDIES 5:00 A.M. Behold the $150,000 Dog Part cuddly. Part vicious. All status symbol.

A few years ago, in Bozeman, Montana, a brain surgeon and his wife were walking through a farmers’ market when they came across a booth selling dogs. The breeder, called Svalinn, touted them as a one-of-a-kind hybrid: military-grade protection dogs with elite danger-sensing instincts but the warmth and temperament of a conventional family pet. The surgeon, Regis Haid, took a closer look at the dogs, which did indeed seem magnificent, intelligent, and powerful. Then he saw the cost: at least $150,000 each.

Haid’s wife, Mary Ellen, was interested. He told her, “There’s no way I’m gonna spend that kind of money. Are you out of your mind?” Many stories about Svalinn dogs begin this way. The Haids couldn’t stop thinking about the animals they’d seen, and before long, they drove to Svalinn’s training facility. Each dog is an undisclosed mix of Dutch shepherd, German shepherd, and Belgian Malinois. “They put the dogs through all these obstacle courses and things,” Haid recalled recently. “I was in the military, I had an Air Force scholarship to med school, and I’ve hunted. These dogs — they’re like humans.” Many high-dollar protection dogs are nothing but menace; Haid approached one of the Svalinn dogs, who nuzzled his hand. He and Mary Ellen now own two.o a very emotional thing.”

I dare someone to try to grab one off the street, like those little pug dogs.

If successful, the kidnapper will pay mucho to get rid of him.

He and Mary Ellen now own two.

He said no, they now own 2.
Why does that happen?

True story in my neighborhood. Some inbred guy and his family had a rickety fence and a nasty pit bull. You know the family you only met on Halloween when their ill tempered brats took 2 handfuls of candy out of your bowl. Well, his three precious baby got out of a non-latched gate and chased a black kid down the block, to his complete horror. Luckily, the kid was not hurt in any way. Well, the drama ended about 6 weeks later, police cars rolling up one evening at 11pm to the scene of precious ...dead by being hung off the chain link fence. Dangling with copious spit hanging out of his mouth. It's a pretty gruesome and somewhat satisfying sight. I am sure a few of the family members, a pound of hamburger and a 5 dollar leash took care of the problem

Blacks, white trash or men with little peckers need to feel manly with vicious jughead dogs. All of them need to die. And I'd love to get ready for deer season by practicing on a few.

If you have ever had a Belgian Malinois you get the fact that it is worth it to pay $150K to get one that is already trained and well behaved.

It's probably cost effective too if you factor the money saved in the costs of chewed up furniture and a few insurance claims

Glad to hear a surgeon can afford to spend $300,000 on dogs. But I’ve got good insurance so who cares?

Belgian Malinois

High upkeep, very active and intelligent dogs. They will go crazy if you do not exercise their body and mind enough.

his three precious baby

Was it three pit bulls?

The inbred guy and his family killed their one of the three precious babies?

“A fool and his money are soon parted.”

The price is purely the status symbol part.

I’ll keep my rottweilers and dobermans. Intelligent, family oriented, empathetic and goofy as anything. Best family dogs. My rottie was my daughter’s 24/7 security detail and court jester. That dog had a second sense about her. She loved everyone, except one person — a loner in the neighborhood that got her spidey sense tingling. No matter how far that guy was away from my daughter — she’d start growling and position herself between my daughter and werid guy.

When the guy moved out, I learned, he was a kiddy fiddler and was on the sex offender registry — and was only able to live in the neighborhood because of some weird lease technicality.

My Rottie just sensed something off about that guy. And thank G-d she did.

The Doberman was just a gentle, smart, dapper soul.

I miss them both.

And the only time anyone of us went to the hospital? Because my rott sideswiped me, slowly, as we both exited my daughter’s nursery. She bent my knee inward, partial tear of my medial meniscus occured. That dog was made of solid concrete.

I have a Havanese/Lhasa Aspo mix: fifteen pounds of toughness (Lhasa Apsos were bred by Tibetan monks to guard temples) and cuddliness. She is dozing in my lap as I write. She is a sturdy little dog and a great watchdog, very protective of her pack and territory. I don’t require monster dog.

I have compromised: I spent a mere $900 on Ithaca M87, cylinder bore 12 gauge Magnum with slam-fire.

Personally, I think it's much cuddlier than a dog and I don't to walk the damn thing every morning and evening.

As impressive as a well-trained Malinois can be, I’ll take a wiener dog, thank you very much.

My neighbor got a Belgian Malinois puppy free from the local PAWS. He has been training it and I see him in the mornings and seems to be doing well. I don’t think the shelter knew what it had, I got my trained Blue Heeler (2 year old) from the shelter ... listed it as a Grey Cattle Dog.

So, they are a mix of three types of dogs. What happens to all the dogs that haven’t received the desired attributes of each type of dog?
