Alligator lunging at cars in North Carolina

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue made everyone giggle Friday when they posted about an adventure their chief and the Brunswick County Sheriff's deputies had overnight.

Around 1 a.m., Brunswick County deputies got a call asking for help with a strange traffic issue. It appears an alligator, which they thought looked about 12-feet long, was lying in the middle of the road, lunging at passing cars.

Since the gator was huge, Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue was called in to help. The chief and a Quick Response Vehicle was sent to the scene.

"After a first attempt to walk this gentleman across the road failed, we turned to what we know best ... we flowed some water. With a gentle shower deployed to encourage a retreat, the gator finally decided he was done with civilization for the time being and finally moved on back into his more natural habitat," the post reads on Facebook.

No one, including the alligator, was injured in the encounter.

Alligators are common found in North Carolina's Coastal Plain, but North Carolina is the northern most area an alligator will typically be found, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The American alligator can reach up to 13-feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds. Females are typically smaller, measuring around 9-feet long and 200 pounds.

My son has a Boston terrier and his sidekick, a mix with some terrier instincts. Both around 15-20#. The two of them TEAR out of the back door and have a standard around the backyard chipmunk search and destroy routine. They get one every week or three. They’re tough on small mammals. Boston terriers have a built in by instinct head shake of death for small critters, I’ve seen it many times with ours on toys. Ours have never been the hunters of live game these two dogs are, though.

I grew up from the 8th grade up to college living on a lake in central Florida. I now live on a lake that is connected by canals and only three miles away from where I grew up. I cannot confirm or deny rumors that I caught alligators at night under a spot light with bare hands or that I caught up to a 7 ft alligator with my bare hands. I also cannot confirm or deny rumors that we had alligator problems grabbing dogs (like labs) off the beach and coming up toward shore when children were playing. Or that I had any complicity in making the problem go away for a while.

Umm, what kind of people live there? It is a road bump. You are in a two-ton vehicle. Its ribs cannot deal with that.

So, if something like that crawled onto your lawn and ate your dog you’d wait for the coppers?

Geesh. I’d expect something like that out this way in CaCaLand — the land of spineless doofs.

Could they train it to go after Audis? And then send it here? Please. We have an epidemic where apparently every @$$hole driver has decided to buy an Audi.

As someone who lived in Florida for over 40 years, you’re right except for two things.

I have seen alligators in the ocean AND swimming pools.

Photos, road markers, etc. help when you have a photo to
apply the data to. We are a little beyond what was used
in Columbus’s day.

Retreated back into the swamp? That’s bad.

Looks like a job for Amos Moses!

The size is rather alarming. They just let it go back into the swamp.

It will come back again...............
