Alligator lunging at cars in North Carolina

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, N.C. — Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue made everyone giggle Friday when they posted about an adventure their chief and the Brunswick County Sheriff's deputies had overnight.

Around 1 a.m., Brunswick County deputies got a call asking for help with a strange traffic issue. It appears an alligator, which they thought looked about 12-feet long, was lying in the middle of the road, lunging at passing cars.

Since the gator was huge, Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue was called in to help. The chief and a Quick Response Vehicle was sent to the scene.

"After a first attempt to walk this gentleman across the road failed, we turned to what we know best ... we flowed some water. With a gentle shower deployed to encourage a retreat, the gator finally decided he was done with civilization for the time being and finally moved on back into his more natural habitat," the post reads on Facebook.

No one, including the alligator, was injured in the encounter.

Alligators are common found in North Carolina's Coastal Plain, but North Carolina is the northern most area an alligator will typically be found, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. The American alligator can reach up to 13-feet long and weigh up to 500 pounds. Females are typically smaller, measuring around 9-feet long and 200 pounds.

Sometimes I want to know who walked alongside of the alligator to measure whether he was 10 feet, 11 feet, or 12 feet, because they didn’t capture this one. They just let him mosey along.

“They just let him mosey along:

Which means there’s a chance it’s still in that area and still a nuisance.

Here, one that big would be caught and relocated to a more suitable environmentor a gator farm.

I would say that alligator is 8-9 ft and 250 pounds. I have one that cruises the lake I live on that I think could be 12 ft and it looks to weigh double the weight of this one. This is a big alligator, no doubt, just not 12 ft.

BTW, if you’re in FL, I have learned a way to tell if a body of water in Florida not the ocean and not a pool has an alligator in it.

Walk up to the water’s edge, put your hand in the water, and splash it a little bit.

If the water is wet, there’s an alligator in there.

You know the difference between an alligator and a crocodile?

An Alligator will see you later, whereas a Crocodile will see you in a while.

In the ‘60s I saw a very large gator in the Little Rock zoo that they said had been captured in the swamps of SE Arkansas. I’ve also heard of them being in the Dismal swamp of Virginia.

Min road lane width is 12 feet and he spanned a lane.

My neighbor in Jax liked to show off her scar. Upper thigh to below the knee. Earned it swimming in a river as a teen a decade earlier. I used to canoe in waters around Jax. Very very carefully. Would not do so now.
