Bangkok: ‘Stop Giving Money to Beggars’

Thailand’s government has decided to increase its crackdown on beggars in popular tourist areas. Foreigners will also be asked to refrain from giving money to beggars in popular vacation spots, including Bangkok.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on June 12, Thailand plans to strengthen its crackdown on beggars who flock to the capital city, Bangkok, and other famous vacation spots.

On June 11, Varawut Silpa-archa, the Minister of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand, emphasized, “Various organizations, including the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the police, will participate in the crackdown. Regular operations will be carried out to arrest people who habitually beg.” He added, “Over the past decade, we have arrested about 7,000 beggars, about 30% of whom were foreigners. Foreigners caught will be deported back to their countries, and locals will receive vocational training to find jobs at state-run shelters.”

However, Silpa-archa admitted that such measures cannot stop habitual criminals who make a lot of money through begging.

According to the Thailand law, begging can be punished with a prison term of up to one month or a fine of up to about $300.

According to SCMP and other media outlets, beggars in Bangkok can earn up to approximately $3,000 a month. This means the money earned from begging can be up to ten times the fine.

Here, too.

I had a friend some years back who had been through Teen Challenge and got saved and set free from his addictions.

He told me to NEVER, EVER give money to these people on the streets holding the signs. He knew them and said they were not really homeless and they would use the money for drugs.

He said that there are plenty of options for help for them and they know it, but refuse to abide by the rules of programs and be accountable. IOW, they really don’t want the help. He told me that if they really wanted out of the lifestyle, they could do it just like he did.

His advice for helping people was to give to an organization that has a good track record for helping others, or to do it through church, where you know the money is being used responsibly.

I was hoping that we would see something from our leaders about the flood of every-damn-corner beggars we have here. Almost every one of them are able-bodied and aggressive to different degrees, with some actually going into the traffic to knock on windows.

If I see someone begging who is old, crippled, missing a limb - then OK, I'll give some money - but the vast majority could hold a job easy and just the sound of crickets coming from our legislatures.

We're approaching the begging cultures of Third World countries - when I spent a year in Egypt, I was told that some families deliberately blind or maim their children so they can be effective beggars . This is the same country where families live in Cairo's biggest graveyard (called the City if the Dead) and yet more in in the city's biggest dump.

If I could change one thing I would shut down the Free Stuff Factory sponsored by our local churches.

A story older than Oliver Twist.

It is ironic that the left knows not the feed the bears, or other wild animals, but can’t figure out not to do the same with beggars.

I actually saw a video or police dealing with a *legless* vet in a wheel chair.

He was NOT legless. He was sitting on them cross legged.

Scammers are infinitely creative.

“One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble.”

Seven nights in Bangkok had me longing for some clean air.

I remember the old 1950s TV show “Oh Susana!” with Gail Storm in which their ship is in India and they are told not to give money to the beggars.
Captain Huxley does, the beggar takes it then jumps into his fancy car and takes off.
