Hertz Nightmare: Customer Fined $436 Before They Even Rented The Car
View From The Wing ^ | 06/16/2024 | Gary Leff

A Hertz customer accomplished a new feat in the annals of rental car company disservice, actually being charged for a red light ticket before even renting the vehicle.

They rented the vehicle on May 15th at the Calgary Airport for a period of six days, starting at 10:30 p.m. However the agent at the airport logged the rental as starting at 10:30 a.m.

They were hit with an extra day’s charge, beyond the period they actually had the car for And the previous renter “ran a red light at 2:33pm.” But since the system now saw them as having the car at the time, their credit card was hit with $436.50 for the bill.

It would have been impossible for the customer to have had the car at 2:33 p.m. because they were inflight on American Airlines. They provided copies of their boarding passes. Hertz agreed with them about the rental start time – they removed the extra day’s charge – but they still refused to budge on the red light ticket (or the extra fees associated the with the extra day – Hertz removed only the base rental charge). And now Hertz has refused to communicate further, it seems.

It was such a pain - seemingly easy at first - I kept renewing a vehicle because a woman had hit one of my cars, my main car that I was taking to work. It’s been quite a nightmare. And there’s always ___something else___ that somebody cooks up.

“It’s a fraudulent charge and the plaintiff is entitled to damages.”
They can simply refuse to pay and see if Hertz sues them, if they are right on the facts Hertz will find the other guy who ran the red light and bill the right person. I had Sixt try to tell me I drove 5,000 kilometers in France but I had pictures everywhere I went, I drove only 800 km. I never paid, they gave up.

I know a guy who was arrested for stealing a Hertz car when he literally just rented it. Their system reported it stolen. He spent the day in jail and missed a businesss meeting.

But they probably banned you from ever renting from Hertz again, right? Too bad, so sad.

“Welcome the Hertz, may I have your credit card?”

Customer, “but I haven’t rented a car yet, don’t we need to tell you what we want and discuss charges?”

Hertz “we have all ready done that, just need your card to close out the charges….” “Please also complete our customer survey….”

Why does anyone rent from Hertz? I gave up on them about 40 years ago.

I usually rented from Europcar (National back then) in the UK. I was broadsided on Stockley Park Road just down from Holiday Inn one evening. Puegot 505, folded in the middle, not a scratch on me but it spun at least twice and ended up in the median. The little Chevrolet / Vauxhall that hit me had the engine under the car, driver unharmed as well. It could have been nasty. Called Europcar to tell them what happened and they asked if I was OK and did I want them to send me another car? I declined the offer saying I had enough driving for one day, maybe tomorrow. That was the last I heard of it but my back still hurts.

A few years ago I had a car from Enterprise. It was a long term rental for work. 2-3 months. I was a little concerned because I got a little scratch in the right door. Enterprise is really fussy about scratches.

One day I was at a stop light in the right lane. There was a semi in the left lane. When the light turned green, he proceeded to make a right turn from the left lane. I was totally stuck as I saw his trailer coming ever closer.

“He’s gonna take off my mirror.” I thought. Nope. He crushed the entire left side of the car and kept going. Hit and run made everything really easy. Enterprise asked me to have it towed to a body shop and they mat me there with a different car. Nothing more was ever said about it.

Rented a car from Sixt in May 2024 through Expedia in San Diego. Do not rent through a turd party like Expedia and never rent from Sixt. I don’t have time to list the hassles.

This should be simple enough to solve with a letter or email or two. It's essential to document everything. I don't know the purpose of a lawsuit unless there are significant costs incurred or if this ends up impacting a credit report. "Inconvenience" usually doesn't amount to anything significant.

One evening in 2014 I had an Enterprise car’s transmission freeze up in Bristol RI about 5 miles from the hotel. They sent a tow to get it and a Dunkin Donuts employee gave us a ride home after her shift.

The next day I called Enterprise and said, “The car I rented broke down and you towed it away. You’ll have to bring us a new car!” Within an hour a tow truck showed up with our new car. It had 6 miles on it.

We also got a nice reduction when we finished our rental.
