Hertz Nightmare: Customer Fined $436 Before They Even Rented The Car
View From The Wing ^ | 06/16/2024 | Gary Leff

A Hertz customer accomplished a new feat in the annals of rental car company disservice, actually being charged for a red light ticket before even renting the vehicle.

They rented the vehicle on May 15th at the Calgary Airport for a period of six days, starting at 10:30 p.m. However the agent at the airport logged the rental as starting at 10:30 a.m.

They were hit with an extra day’s charge, beyond the period they actually had the car for And the previous renter “ran a red light at 2:33pm.” But since the system now saw them as having the car at the time, their credit card was hit with $436.50 for the bill.

It would have been impossible for the customer to have had the car at 2:33 p.m. because they were inflight on American Airlines. They provided copies of their boarding passes. Hertz agreed with them about the rental start time – they removed the extra day’s charge – but they still refused to budge on the red light ticket (or the extra fees associated the with the extra day – Hertz removed only the base rental charge). And now Hertz has refused to communicate further, it seems.

HERTZ has been posting their signs and ads for services at General Aviation airports around the USA, but they don’t pickup or deliver to the airport. Probably want to avoid this brand until they straighten up and fly right again.

It’s a fraudulent charge and the plaintiff is entitled to damages.

How hard is it to get the ticket redirected to the driver who had the car then?

Hertz once was a good company. Then, like the downfall of most companies in this century, the MBAs got hold of it and applied their pointy headed "business theories", thus running it into the ground.

Andrew Carnegie was one of the greatest leaders of American business. He was a builder. He was a maker. He was an industrialist. He was a thrifty hard nosed Scotsman, and rich beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

Andrew Carnegie in his long life never, ever, not even once met an MBA let alone hired one.

Carnegie sold to J.P. Morgan and retired in 1901, well before most MBA programs were even established. You have a point though in that Carnegie and other business builders large and small focused intently on the details of their businesses, while MBAs tend to try to fit various ideas to a business without properly understanding the business. That often goes wrong.

Hertz’s failed investment in electric vehicles was an expensive mistake: it lost another $195 million last quarter in depreciation value from writing off the remaining EVs the company has held for sale. Perhaps they are fleecing their customers to make up the loss.

[Hertz does it again.]

I had to rent from Hertz in 2022.

I thought it was working out but there was at least one doofus in the local office.

It’s all contractors now so I couldn’t reach a corporate person.

I don’t think I’ll ever use Hertz again after that experience. And I rented for several months.

Hertz needs to compensate for the huge loss they sustained by foolishly investing in a fleet of Teslas. At least it made them feel good for a while until reality bit them in the rear quarter panel.

Its the same all over... some high school doofus gets into a position where you have to ask him for somethin and they get to throw their weight around because that’s the only place in life they get petty little enjoyment.

Confrontational is their default mode.
