Flag Day is a national holiday in the United States that commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777. It is not a federal holiday, but is still widely observed and celebrated across the country.

History of Flag Day

The idea to set aside a day to honor the national flag came from several sources. Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, in 1885 urged his students to observe June 14 as “Flag Birthday.” He later wrote an essay published in a Chicago newspaper that urged Americans to proclaim this date as the day to celebrate the flag.

Observance of Flag Day

Flag Day is typically observed on June 14 every year. While it is not a federal holiday, many government offices, schools, and businesses may still be closed or operate on reduced hours. Flag-raising ceremonies, parades, and other patriotic events are often held to commemorate the occasion.

Flag Etiquette

When displaying the U.S. flag, there are certain etiquette rules to follow:

The flag should be flown at half-staff from sunrise to noon to honor the nation’s heritage. The flag should be raised to the top of the flagpole at noon to symbolize the country’s independence. The flag should be flown at full staff until sunset. When displaying the flag outdoors, it should be flown in a location where it can be easily seen and respected. Interesting Facts

The first annual recognition of the flag’s birthday dates back to 1885, when Cigrand organized a group of Wisconsin students to observe June 14. The Flag Resolution, adopted on June 14, 1777, stated that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, and that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. Flag Day is often celebrated with parades, essay contests, and other patriotic events. Overall, Flag Day is a significant holiday in the United States that honors the country’s national symbol and the principles of freedom and democracy it represents.

Flag Day. Not a National Holiday. But MLK Day and Juneteenth are.

This year we are flying the 48-star flag as a protest against what the US has become.

Thought about flying the flag upside down today, but it would just piss off the neighbors. I’m not flying any flag today.

I live in Redmond Oregon, and it may be one of the last holdouts for a legitimate United States. It is the official Flag City USA. On holidays including Flag Day volunteers put out 1,700 flags along the one-way stretches of this small town. We put them out at 6AM and retrieve them at 6PM.

The Continental Congress came up with the design for the flag. Most people probably think Betsy Ross did.

I used to live in Military City, USA. You know where that is? I haven’t heard that term used - for good reason - to describe San Antonio in a long time.

Today is not just Flag day - not just Trump’s birthday - but my birthday also.

I’m flying my father’s USA flag. He probably got it sometime in the 1980’s. Maybe earlier. I inherited it when he died in 1991. Shortly after 9/11 I brought it to the office where it remained for several years. Remember 9/11? America had a sense of pride and patriotism then. Then Clinton got elected and things went to hell in a hurry. 9 years after muslims attacked America - we went and elected one as president.

The flag now resides with me at home.
