New study reveals Viagra improves brain blood flow and could help prevent dementia

A new trial reveals that sildenafil, commonly known as Viagra, enhances blood flow to the brain and improves the function of brain blood vessels in patients at a heightened risk of vascular dementia.

This study marks a potentially pivotal step in the fight against this debilitating condition.

Dr. Alastair Webb said, "This is the first trial to show that sildenafil gets into the blood vessels in the brain in people with this condition, improving blood flow and how responsive these blood vessels are.

The significance of this research lies in its potential to transform the treatment and prevention of vascular dementia, which currently lacks specific therapies.

Chronic damage to the small blood vessels in the brain is not only the leading cause of vascular dementia but also contributes to 30% of strokes and 80% of brain bleeds. High blood pressure, reduced blood flow to the brain, and impaired blood vessel function exacerbate these conditions, making the findings of this trial particularly crucial.

The OxHARP trial was a meticulously designed double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 75 participants who had experienced a minor stroke and showed signs of mild to moderate small vessel disease. Each participant received sildenafil, a placebo, and cilostazol (a similar drug) over three-week periods in a randomized order. The study employed cardiovascular physiology tests, ultrasound, and functional MRI scans to evaluate the drugs' effects.

Key findings include:

- Sildenafil increased blood flow in both large and small brain vessels as measured by ultrasound and MRI scans.

- Sildenafil enhanced the blood flow response to carbon dioxide, indicating improved cerebrovascular function.

- Both sildenafil and cilostazol lowered blood vessel resistance in the brain. Sildenafil caused fewer side effects compared to cilostazol, particularly with less incidence of diarrhea.

L-arginine supplement does same thing (blood flow enhancement in certain types of blood vessels) and you certainly aren’t limited to 6 pills a month! I take it for a different reason but do notice the “Viagra” effect sometimes.

Yeah OK it makes you “functional” but you also risk dying.

At least you'll die happy.

Don't say you've never suspected.
From the out of print "Cafe Society" album recorded on the Kicking Mule Records Label. There's also "Life is a Gamble" on that record.

This makes lots of sense. When we men get old the best part of sex is thinking about it and remembering it, so using Viagra seems like the most appropriate medication to take.

So... you're saying that you have thought of them?!

And as an additional side benefit, it keeps the old men from rolling out of bed.

From the study itself:

"... CONCLUSIONS: Sildenafil did not reduce pulsatility but increased cerebrovascular reactivity and perfusion. Sildenafil merits further study to determine whether it prevents the clinical sequelae of small vessel disease. ...."

Doesn't quite seem to line up with the claims in the OP's story.

I have a high risk of dementia. My mother died of it as did her mother. My father now has it. I’m diabetic. I showed this study to my doctor.

He shrugged. He prescribed the pills.

I’m now happy and my wife is happy.

I read the whole article linked at comment #26. My personal take-away is that a number of men with bad reactions were involved with hotel sex. Thus, perhaps overexcitement, or additional stress of travel/sneaky sex, might have been a factor. Below is the Conclusion of the article, with inserts [ ] by me. Sex is exercise, and should not be overdone by people in questionable health or in advanced age.

“Conclusion: Many articles emphasize the need to screen patients for cardiovascular risk before the prescription of sildenafil, but the over-the-counter availability of the drug in all pharmacies makes it hard to implement guidelines. As a countermeasure, sildenafil should be made a prescription drug that is prescribed after thorough evaluation of comorbidities, especially cardiovascular, and medications of patients such as nitrates. [Azithromycin* and colchicine were mentioned]
Moreover, patients who are prescribed drugs that are proven to have interactions with sildenafil should receive education regularly at their follow-up visits and offered alternatives to be used such as vacuum pump, alprostadil intraurethral pellet (suppository), intrapenile injections of alprostadil or papaverine, and surgery alternatives such as penile prostheses or penile revascularization. Other articles have emphasized the need to screen for sildenafil levels during an autopsy if the death was related to any sexual activity. To conclude, the literature available on this topic is deemed insufficient to provide enough data to establish a direct link of causality between sildenafil and mortality. Although some studies paint sildenafil as the culprit behind deaths such as these. [Viagra became pubicly available in 2018, so more followup will help.]
Further studies, research, and complete autopsies with advice to check for sildenafil levels if a death is suspected due to sexual activity [like daily use] are needed to explain the unexpected deaths following the use of sildenafil.”

*Azithromycin was mentioned as part of Dr. Zelenko’s 3 part treatment for early Covid symptoms. He later recommended Doxycycline as safer because of a slight cardiac risk with Azith.

A study of happy marriages I read years ago said the happiest couples had sex 6 to 10 times a month. The fill rate of prostate fluid is 3 to 5 days, so it appears these men were having sex in tune with prostate fluid build up, and there wives were agreeable with their schedule. Sex criminal Jeffry Epstein said he needed sex 3 times a day, indicating he had an abnormal need to discharge his physical tension. Maybe that is why he committed suicide. Imagine having that much need and being impressioned for years.
