‘We just can’t take this anymore’: Montana man, 68, begs for ‘moratorium on property taxes’ after his bill reaches $8K a year just ‘to live in our own house’

A senior from Montana has delivered a viral speech about the sorry state of property taxes in the Treasure State.

“I’m on Social Security, I’m 68-years-old and working just to pay my taxes,” says Kurt, in a clip shared on TikTok by Ryan Busse, who is running to be the next governor of Montana.

Kurt claims that over the last couple of years, his annual property taxes have soared from $895 to almost $8,000 — an increase of around 790% — which he says is like paying almost “$700 a month rent to the state to live in our own house.” The state has an Elderly Homeowner/Renter Tax Credit, and the maximum credit is $1,150.

“There needs to be a moratorium on what we have to pay,” he says, adding that he’s had to continue working into what should be his retirement golden years to cover his mounting property costs. “I’m stubborn enough [that] I don’t want to dig into my bank account to pay them.”

Ah yes, you make a good point. I forgot about the "free" let's push mental illness.

We’ve gone from discussing property taxes, which fund police and fire protection, to a smorgasbord of government taxes. So, where are you going with this?

So? Your local government services aren’t called things Dorang needs.

If a property owner has children in public schools they should pay for it. Once their children are no longer in public schools the portion of their property tax funding public schools should be zero.

I’ve never needed the police. Do I get a refund?

I never said anything about police. I’m addressing schools.

You tell me, you were the one who stated if we don’t pay property taxes we won’t get fire service, I was just pointing out that was hogwash.

The government is holding your home hostage to extort money.
Plain and simple.

we face the same debacle....

to pay off bills, like a big property tax, I need to take some money out of my retirement and then my income level looks higher for the year so my income tax is higher and if my income LOOKS higher, then there is never any property tax relief for seniors because its already a ridiculously low allowance....

and if I take money out to get a new roof, which we need, and a new paint job, will my assessment go up?

not being able to ever truly OWN anything is outrageous....

I agree...a one time assessment when you buy the house, you can pay it out all at once or over 10 yrs or so....but then NO MORE...

where we live, we've paid property tax for near 50 yrs on one house or another....when does it stop.....

there should be some formula...if you have faithfully paid property taxes for lets say 40 yrs, and you're 70, then you should not have to pay anything again....at least greatly reduced...

in my area , our poor public school teachers make over $100,000...that's what we are paying for...

I totally agree.

I don’t know if what you wrote was tongue in cheek, but I agree and would go further.

Income taxes and property taxes, even taxes on license plates or forced auto insurance are an abomination on freedom. Why must we pay a tax for a DL? Is that not the same thing as a tax on voting? A tax on travel? It is obvious that we have the “Right to Travel” protected in the Constutition. That means by common means. We built the roads with fuel taxes, why is there a registration tax on vehicles? Why not just charge us for a DL every few years, that is the cost of printing it? We are not free if we need a passport to travel within the US, which is what the Smart ID is.

On auto insurance, allow people to purchase it if they want, if the guy who can’t afford it (which would be rare because government mandates keep it expensive) pay out of pocket, with garnishments that are paid off out of his earnings? Of course ONLY if he was at fault.

I’m tired of writing about this, but until we slay the dragon of the tax man, we will never be free.

1 vote for each property? Wouldn’t that be slavery?

I saw.

Where does it end?

An itemized list of services you use or need?

Schools provide a need for the community, as do police.

This story makes me chuckle. I was paying close to $8,000/year in property taxes for a house worth about $150K. (See my screenname.) So did all my neighbors. And that was about 10 years ago. Eventually, the property taxes were lowered to about $7,500 (still too high).

School taxes made up the bulk of the property taxes. If you never sent your kids to public school, you would be furious about that school tax. It left my kids and me with very little, and I couldn't afford to keep up with the property. I paid the mortgage and property taxes on time every month, but then I had no choice but to sell the house during the lockdown.

This man's property value jumped. He's right to be angry, but property taxes for a $400,000 home around here would be about $20,000/year or higher.

That's why I take issue with Republicans (and anyone else) who screamed to reopen the schools again.

Another reason to sit on the porch loaded for bear, while the tax assessor or his “hired gun” comes to collect.

The problem with America isn’t that there is too much violence, it is misdirected at innocents instead at the tyrants.

“It’s the law Edith, this here paper says we gotta pay up or move out”. What is the difference between that and Al Capone wanting someones property?

In VA if you live in something on wheels they tax at rate that is extremely low - “Unimproved property tax rate”. Buy and Airstream and live large. The problem is the communists that run the power company will not run electricity to your site unless you build house.

Here we pay a set amount for monthly water, electric and of course sewer...they measure the water use as sewer output. Of course we pay per mHw, gallons, but $120 if we don’t use any. $40 $30 and $30 for a base fee. MONTHLY

How about a 1% or less tax on the value of the house when you buy. Never goes up from there. If the value goes up while you live there then the tax stays the same as when you bought the property.

The gov’t has incentive to raise the value. This way they cannot get more money out of you.
