A 71-year-old woman who was found dead inside her home had been fatally mauled by a black bear...
Patrice Miller’s body was discovered inside her Downieville home in November last year by police who had been called to carry out a welfare check.
Officers discovered a grisly scene with evidence that a bear had been inside, likely for several days, feeding on the woman’s remains.

Initially, investigators thought she had died before to the bear’s entry. However, an autopsy report completed last month revealed Miller was killed when the animal swiped or bit her neck, Sierra County Sheriff Mike Fisher confirmed.

The police described the scene as "something I had never seen before

Downieville is a town with a mere population of 290 people. It is about 50 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe. “Downieville, being a pretty small, tight-knit community, everybody kind of takes care of everybody and keeps an eye out

There are about 35,000 black bears in California, up from around 10,000 to 15,000 in 1982,
As the old saying goes, “What does not kill you will make you stronger. Except for bears. Bears will kill you.”
Yes, possibly but we dont really know why he broke in.
In areas where humans and bears live together closely it not uncommon for bears to break into homes to steal the bacon grease and a box of twinkies or something.
I know that not too far north of where I am that the people living in the woods tend to put all pork grease in a can tied in a plastic bag or two in the freezer to keep the smell down and stop by the dump to drop the can off on a frequent basis.
Its hard to say why the bear came in initially, if she saw it and tried to run down the hall or something she would have just been inviting the bear to pursue.
Here in CT in the northwest part of the state the people are treating black bears like they’re cute neighbors. They are breaking into homes but no one is allowed to stop them.
I started reading about black bears after one showed up in my back yard 20 years ago. It was stalking my wife who was 5 feet tall 115 pounds. She felt something in the woods watching her. I told her it was probably a squirrel. Boy was I wrong. A 500 pound bear came out of the woods. We ran to the house 15 yards away. I learned that you fight a black bear because he wants to eat you. States need to start bear hunting seasons to thin the heard and make bears fear humans again.
Black bears are not our friends.
Many liberal progressives have a Hollywood - Disneyland view of wildlife.
They also think food comes from a can or a box at store = so we do not need family farmers, family ranchers..
A bear might assume you taste just like chicken soup! 😋
“I didn’t know black bears would aggressively go after people, especially in their own homes.”
Most bears are opportunistic foragers, they’ll eat anything.
There are at least two species of bear which stalk prey. The polar bear, and a close cousin called the black bear. Both bears are somewhat opportunistic around landfiills but they are stalkers.
“I read she was feeding stray cats on her porch and had to chase bear(s) away before.”
There was a lady a couple of streets over that does that and yes black bears have been sighted, this is a somewhat rural neighborhood but there are 200 houses in here and there are bears and coyotes and other such critters, wild Emu’s have even been spotted and photographed.
I think she moved about a year ago and the neighbors still talk about the activity in behind her house with critters.. and yeah she was a cat lady.

I do!
First known attack since records have been kept.
Yep
....kinda like me.
I just watched “Cocaine Bear” last night.
[A bear broke through a glass pane to gain entry into Trujillo’s house...]
I hope it wasn’t so that it could reach in and open the door, that’s too much smart for my comfort.
