I'm at Seatac Airport (SEA) at the gate for my 10:00 A.M. flight LY9468 through Newark to Tel Aviv. I'm volunteering for the IDF through their organization "Sar-El". Usually, volunteers do warehousing work on base, live in the barracks, and eat with the soldiers.
I believe in transmogrification. For three weeks, I'm freeing up an 18-year-old Israeli kid with an M16 to go into Gaza and kill ham ass. I'm 62 and fit, and I can do the warehousing work that a soldier would otherwise have to do, and they can go to the front. Through the magic of transmogrification, I'm on the front lines of the fight for Western Civilization against the savage for 3 weeks.
You can do this too! Here's the Sar-El site:
SAR-EL - The National Project for Volunteers for Israel
https://www.sar-el.org/
Here's their Purpose statement:
"What is the purpose of Sar-El? Sar-El supporters come from around the world and from within our country to contribute to the security of the State of Israel by assisting on IDF bases in a logistical support role.
It is a unique volunteer experience fostering new friendships, greater understanding and the creation of a cultural exchange between Israel and the volunteers’ home countries.
Sar-El welcomes friends of Israel as volunteers, many of whom become “goodwill ambassadors” for our country. We are the only volunteer program that situates volunteers directly on IDF bases to work side by side with our soldiers."
They make this reasonably easy to accomplish. They have 1, 2 and 3 week programs. You have to get there, and arrange your own weekends, so it's not cheap.
There is a certain point in life where I cannot just flap my jaw and be a keyboard warrior. This is my time, and this is my way to do something concrete.
I'm arriving early, staying late, and have weekends off. I'll have lots of time to hang with the locals in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. My situational awareness is good, and the real threat level is relatively low (knives and car rammings are less frequent than shootings in Chicago!) It's my first trip to Israel, so it should be interesting.
Y'all keep the FReeper "allahu akhbar chorus" in line while I'm gone (they know who they are, and most of you do too). I'll be dark during the Israeli work week (Sun-Thu), as internet use is not allowed on base. I may check in on Friday or Saturday from the city. I'll do an after-action report on the plane back through Boston on June 10th, op sec being observed.
Keep up the good fight, and FREEP ON!

Hooya!!! I sure hope you’ll post regular SITREPs!!
The guy is 62 years old. Give him a break. An American isn't going to be a combat troop during a two or three week stint. Not to mention, there are laws concerning American citizens being part of a foreign military involved in combat operations. And then there's the simple fact about a language barrier. Would you want someone who doesn't speak your language and is 62 years old by your side when you find yourself engaged in a firefight?
No worries. I didn’t take his post badly. It seems he just wanted to confirm the general facts, which he got right.
Ditto!
I can’t say it better...
Thanks for the ping list!
My pleasure!
Thanks Uncle Miltie for the posts and your service to civilization. Take notes and pics if you can. Looking forward to your return and reports.

Pics are often not allowed on base, so I’m not going to try.
How does one post pics from town (Tel Aviv, Jerusalem)?
I don’t want to sign up for a service if I can avoid it ...
Amen.
Thank you.
That’s what I thought. Forget the pics. Notes if you can. If not, memory. Stay safe FRiend.
Boarding now.
Will check in from Newark.
Party on!
three cheers for you uncle, stay safe
Bless you and stay safe!
Respect! Stay safe. . .
Bless you! I’ll check out that site too!
Good for you Uncle Miltie - you're making us proud. Freeing up a young soldier to fight in this just cause is an amazing gift on your part. That said, YOU need to be careful too. You're in our prayers - stay safe.
Wow. I wish I was 15 years younger. God bless you.
P.S. if you run into Julie, will you tell her to get back to me about my marriage proposal?
