Study suggests daily consumption of olive oil reduces chances of developing dementia (Half a teaspoon of olive oil a day reduced dementia risk 28%)

A team of researchers has found evidence that daily consumption of olive oil may reduce the chances of developing dementia.

In their study, the group analyzed data for thousands of people included in two separate health databases and found that those people who consumed at least 7 g of olive oil daily were less likely to die from dementia-related ailments.

Prior research has suggested that following the Mediterranean diet can lead to healthier outcomes for most people. The diet tends to stress consuming legumes, vegetables, nuts, fish, dairy and olive oil. In this new study, the research team found evidence that the heavy use of olive oil in such diets may be one of its most significant factors.

To learn more about possible health benefits of regularly consuming olive oil, the researchers studied patient data for more than 60,000 women included in the Nurses' Health Study and more than 31,000 men included in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Both databases include historical information, following patients for up to 30 years. They also include data regarding cause of death.

The researchers found that 4,751 of the 92,383 patients listed in the two databases had died from dementia-related causes. In comparing diet information, they found that those who had consumed at least a half-teaspoon of olive oil per day over the course of the study years were 28% less likely to have died from diseases related to the development of dementia.

The team suggests that consumption of a Mediterranean diet, with a strong emphasis on olive oil, may reduce the chances of developing dementia by inhibiting inflammation caused by other factors.

I use spray EVOO for the pan when doing eggs and low temperature stuff. If I’m doing anything involving some temperature, out comes the avocado oil.

“I have olive oil, but I seldom use it.”

I do have some, but I really don’t like the taste. It has a funky aftertaste to me. I should give it another try.

Is it supposed to be refrigerated or not? It seems to make it too dense to use, so I don’t. Hubby refrigerates everything, and the OO turns into a big thick glob that won’t pour.

It might keep longer in the fridge, but, yeah, it won’t pour when it’s cold.

Celtic salt is quite healthy. Iodized salt is the killer.

Since it wasn't long ago that we were reading about olive oil shortages and big price increases - I wonder who funded this study - and if it's aimed at those who can't seem to remember the 'distressed' olive oil industry.

In May, there were numerous stories about it - here's a headline from one:

SUSTAINABLE FUTURE ‘Liquid gold’: An olive oil shortage is fueling record prices and food insecurity fears

I am wondering if an honest study was done, if it is natural fat that keeps the brain lubed.
Like your butter.

Some olive oils are rank imitation. Since I don’t know which are true, I use walnut oil. Lots of walnut oil. It goes good with savory and sweet dishes.

but this should probably be considered an association,
rather than proof.

+++++++++

Just a 1/2 teaspoon a day appeared to reduce dementia
risk 28%. Worth a swallow if one chooses help or no help.

You have to be careful about olive oil to avoid fake oil that is not what the label claims. I recently watched a video that described a mafia operation in Italy where they were buying up bulk quantities of low quality olive oil and other types of oil and putting it into expensive-looking bottles and shipping it to the US. There were a number of arrests, Italy is very strict about this. The US is apparently much less so. People say fakery abounds.

I have read that oils from California are more likely to be the real thing.

I have only recently started taking olive oil, so I am not claiming to be an expert. I recommend doing some research on YouTube, or elsewhere.

I think you may be a little late with the olive oil. I’ve been consuming olive oil over 70 years. My mother used to pressure cook most of the veggies then slather them with olive oil. Olive oil Vinegar and lemon makes the most delightful dressing on salad. While I all use olive oil , I think whether you carry the APOE3 gene is more likely associated with dementia.

Possible alternative to buying possibly Mafia Adulterated Olive Oil (and maybe less expensive):

Polyphenol-Based Design of Functional Olive Leaf Infusions

"The beneficial properties of polyphenols are widely recognized, and polyphenol-rich olive oil, which is part of the typical Mediterranean diet, has been identified as having positive health effects. However, over the past decade, olive leaves have been discovered as an alternative polyphenol-rich source. This is particularly interesting in the context of the growing interest in functional foods, as well as in terms of the management of biological waste, including olive leaves that are left over from the production of olive oil. Previous studies on olive leaves confirmed that they have a high phenolic content, which explains their previously described strong antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral activity. Therefore, the major aim of our work is to comprehensively determine olive leaf phenolic content in cultivars Istarska bjelica, Leccino and Buža as a natural source of bioactive compounds suitable for daily consumption in the form of infusion."

Snip..."Data from a number of studies suggest that olive leaf extracts reduce the risk of cardio- vascular disease (CVD) due to their anti-atherosclerotic, hypotensive, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypocholesterolaemic effects (4). The phenolic compounds from leaves also possess antimicrobial (2) and neuroprotective activity (5). Nevertheless, limited data on the effects of olive leaf polyphenols in humans is available in the scientific literature. Still, some randomized clinical studies show that olive leaf polyphenols are favourable modulators of blood pressure, plasma lipid profiles (4) and insulin sensitivity in overweight people (6)."

A Search of "Olive Leaf Supplements" will yield links to sellers and more articles on this subject.

Good question. Usual,y people who are told they have, or could get some health problem, start to exercise more, throw out junk food mostly anyways, reduce couch time, quit smo,ing etc etc etc.

It could be that all of that works to bring g about big changes- or it cou,d actually be the oil- hard to tell not knowin as they say.

But, oil is supposed to be good for us anyways, so can’t hurt to add it daily- however, is this research a mafia effort to up the sale of olive oil? Lol

One of the things that criminals do is cut real olive oil with sunflower oil and add some chlorophyll to darken it to make it look like EVOO. Here is an article that discusses adulterated EVOO and listings of real Olive Oil brands:

I get a terrific price at Amazon.
Pompeian First Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil
48 ounces $16.47

I buy so much stuff at AMZ, I get free delivery on everything, but even if you have to pay for delivery, it’s a good deal for quality oil. “First cold pressed” is ideal As is “Extra Virgin.”
