I was notified several weeks ago to report for Jury Duty today. A responsibility of all American citizens and one that I was proudly called to be a part of. I am a resident of Gwinnett County Georgia. In the process, we were shown a 12-minute video explaining why it was a civic responsibility of all Americans. First of all, the video was over 10 years old, but most glaringly, it was filled with multiple false statements.
One of the most glaring false comments that stuck with me was that they said America is a Federated Democracy. I did my best to bring this to the attention of several 'leaders'. Of the six that I asked, everyone looked at me with a blank stare. They all said that they would make note of this statement and a few others that I also brought to their attention. Nothing was ever written down and I had no avenue to write my concerns.
The word Democracy does not appear in the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.
Does this one statement bother anyone or am I just blowing things up?
I’ve never been called for jury duty but if I were I’d be happy to go and do it.
technically, the USA is now an idiocracy
And kudos to you for serving. I served in jury too, decades ago. It was a pain, but I'd rather have more of us who think with sense be on juries than it be only the chronic work avoiders.
“You actually showed up for jury duty, so here’s a dumb video”. I doubt they actually expect anybody to be paying attention. Which is probably why they just looked at you, in their heads it was probably “you watched that thing?!”
yup, i don’t want to be tried by 12 people not smart enough to get out of jury duty...
It has been over 25 years for me.
I noticed that the hundred or so people that they selected were either - Foreign, Black, or female. Only a handful of male Caucasians.
Thank you for your comment.
Not that it mattered today, but I brought copies of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution. I get a couple of dozen each year for my Congressional Rep.
Sorry if I sound arrogant, but the fact is that they just don't want overly intelligent people on juries anymore.
“I’ve never been called for jury duty but if I were I’d be happy to go and do it.”
This probably isn’t gonna come out right but considering you’ve never served, with all due respect your comment is uninformed.
I’ve been called 4 times in 10 years. Last time was just this March. 1st time I ended up on a jury, 2nd and 3rd I didn’t get picked. last time I was in a group of 35 people that a jury was to be selected from but the trial was “continued” so we all got released with our civic duty completed in the eyes of the court.
My personal opinion......I’ll do it if called but it’s a PITA if you ask me.
You find yourself on a murder trial jury with the death penalty hanging in the balance and I suspect you may change your view of jury duty. Thats a heavy weight when your actually in the middle of it....just my 2 cent....and then some. 🙂
Well, the idea is to be ‘tried by a jury of t your peers’. So perhaps the CRIMINAL was black, a foreigner, or a woman and NOT a white Caucasian.
Some people actually WANT to be on a jury......having been summoned 4 times in 10 years I really can’t wrap my mind around that. 😏
i’ve been on one.
“they just don’t want overly intelligent people on juries anymore.”
“They” being defense attorneys for the most part.
I'd love to be called for some kind of “hate crime” trial because I am so unalterably opposed to all “hate crime” laws.If it's a white guy who was accused of assaulting a black guy *because he was black* I'd first decide if an assault took place and if there was any justification. If I decided that an unjustified assault did occur I'd vote guilty on any charge that didn't mention race or “hate”. And I'd vote *not* guilty on any charge that was tied to race or “hate”.
My 1st summons resulted in ending up on a jury that sent a guy to prison for 15 years.
It was a slam dunk 100% obviously guilty and it still troubled my conscience for a while. I don’t know why but it did.
When I lived in Florida I got called over and over and over again. Seven times. Served twice plus once as an alternate.
Florida’s system is so stupid that it defies common sense. The counties claim it is tallahassee’s fault and Tallahassee claims it is the counties’ prerogative.
Before I moved out of Florida I swore I was done with that.
If my memory is correct the last case I got called for was a lawsuit between an insurance company and a hospital. I flat told the lawyer questioning me that I had been cheated by hospitals and insurance companies and that no I could not be impartial because as far as I was concerned they were both guilty and they both ought to pay.
How does Florida rotate its jury pool? Well, imagine playing Five Card Stud and shuffling the deck after every hand.
Florida does not go through its pool of eligible voters in a County and then start over. You get called and then you are taken out of the pool for 1 year. And then thrown back in so there are large percentage of people that never get called and and then there are the lucky ones like me who just kept getting called over and over again. I called the county and pointed this out and they said oh Tallahassee makes us do it. I called Tallahassee and Tallahassee said it’s up to the counties. Good old bureaucracies, no one’s responsible for anything and they’re all idiots.
I’ll give you one more example of Florida’s lunacy. We moved to Kentucky. We sold our home, we transferred the titles to our vehicles to kentucky, we got Kentucky driver’s licenses which meant we had to turn in our Florida licenses.
A couple years later my wife gets a jury notice from Polk County demanding that she show up for jury duty. The letter was addressed to our Kentucky address. GIGO
When I was a Peace Officer working for NY State, I was exempt from sitting on a jury. Several years after I retired, I got called for jury duty. Because of chronic physical infirmities, I got a doctor’s note from my rheumatologist exempting me from serving. I’ll be 77 in August. They’ve never called me again.
They keep saying “democracy” so the 51% can rule over the 49%.
That is not the way a Republic works. They know that.
