That’s a fair point, and I’m very sorry you and others had that experience.
However, my puzzlement over the way people reacted to Covid was not directed at the 3-5 percent who got really ill from it - I was talking about the 96-97% who experienced cold like symptoms and yet allowed their lives to be turned upside down.
I got are really sick, then of course, take the necessary precautions and treatments.
In my opinion, the whole world went mad and brainlessly complied with draconian one-size-fits-all measures that were completely inappropriate for the vast majority of people.
No different than forcing everybody to use the wrong pronouns to appease some tiny fraction of the population suffering from gender dysphoria.
Or forcing flood regions to ration water because people in Southern California are worried about it.

I think ‘gain’ is used more in the sense it is used in electronics, not in the sense of ‘acquiring.’
Gain = amplification.
Acquire means to attain - or, yes, gain. But it isn’t meant that way in this context.

But some of this overreaction was triggered by the information coming out of China. We now know that China was deliberately hyping how deadly this virus was in order to justify themselves in clearing the streets of Hong Kong of protestors.
We were constantly seeing videos from China of people falling down in the street. Images of body-bags everywhere laying on the ground and stacked in ambulances up to the ceiling.
China was spraying down the streets with disinfectant, people were wearing disposable booties on their feet to prevent tracking the virus into their homes on their shoes.
You may not have seen these videos or heard this news, but what *I* saw was frightening.
I now believe it was all deliberately fabricated to trigger a panic and to allow them to take total control of the streets of Hong Kong. (Where massive protests had been going on daily for over a year, and thereby humiliating the Chinese communist leadership.)
China faked us out, and many of our officials fell for it just as I did at the time.
China may have taken political advantage of this; but I’ve wondered if they themselves weren’t exactly sure of what they had on their hands.
Genetic enhancement in that sense, sounds like ‘componentially’ changing the way an organism works, Changing an organism in that fashion, would essentially make them a different organism. Enhancement means making a species’ components to work better, but with the same components in place, sort of like a human does by doing body-building.
Yet, the Covid virus, or the corona virus, is still essentially the same virus, and the gain of function virus in question, is still the same virus with enhanced features that it came with. Bigger, better, faster, does not mean a different organism has been created. Covid-19 had/has variations since it came to infect people in 2019, but, those variations did not result in a different species. Does gain of function result in a different species, or are we talking about ‘gain a function’, which would mean just an enhanced virus with the same components?
I never suggested that a ‘different’ organism - much less a different species! - had been ‘created’. And yes - the term ‘gain of function’ indicates an enhancement of what is already there; it doesn’t indicate ‘gaining A function’, which you suggest say presents ‘no difference’ in meaning.
You know what? I think you should find the person who named this type of research and tell him/her that they were very mistaken in their choice of terms. I’m sure that will be a much more satisfying argument for you.
A human being can gain a function that he/she did not have before. Body building can make a person a lot stronger than before. That’s gaining a function. A virus that is enhanced is gaining a function, with the same properties it already possesses. So, why should it be called ‘gain OF function’ when it’s just enhancing a property that already exists in the organism?
No, body building involves enhancing a function that is already there - the ‘stuff’ required to do it is there; so it’s a gain (or increase) OF function.
I’m tired of this now. Find someone else to convince that the term is a misnomer.
What I told you happens to be exactly what this type of research is called. So your argument is with those who named it.

Some of our officials fell for it - others knew it was fabricated but saw it as a great strategy to emulate here against MAGA. The proof is that BLM rioters and illegal border crossers were never forced to wear masks or get vaccinated.
I think that stark double standard was a dead giveaway and the reason I knew it was fake from the beginning. I remember early on when the test kits first became available - Elon Musk tweeting that he took four tests n one day, two of them negative and two of them positive.
There were other ways the fakeness of Covid was exposed.
Some doctor (I forget his name) made an interesting point: Unlike a piss test for pregnancy, there was no way to verify a Covid positive.
No woman has EVER relied on the home pregnancy test - a positive result triggers a doctor visit - and there all sorts of exacting ways to confirm the pregnancy up to and including the fact that a baby eventually comes out.
Not so with Covid. There’s no proof anyone actually had Covid - just those mysterious tests - fake tests created by the same Big Pharma that peddled the fake vaccines.
I think they released it on purpose. The people of Hong Kong were mocking them for over a year, and they dared not send in the army for fear of driving away investment and business, so they fumed and fumed until I think they hit upon the idea of creating a public health crisis that would allow them to send in the army under cover of a "medical emergency."
And it worked. They got the millions of protestors off the streets and have now successfully suppressed that Hong Kong independence from the Chinese leadership nonsense.
As a bonus, it helped them get rid of Trump, who was putting the hurt on them with his trade policy.
I think Georgia was swung by Chinese money going to the governor and the Secretary of state.

May have been, but they had the motive, and they benefitted greatly from it.
