The U.S.-based, Google-funded artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic is suggesting that its AI-powered large language model (LLM) Claude 3 Opus has shown evidence of sentience.
If conclusively proven, Claude 3 Opus would be the first sentient AI being in human history. However, experts in the field remain relatively unconvinced by Anthropic’s insinuation.Claude 3 Opus has impressed many AI experts, especially the LLM‘s ability to solve complex problems almost instantly. However, claims of sentience began to circulate after Anthropic’s prompt engineer Alex Albert showcased an incident where Claude 3 Opus seemingly determined that it was being “tested.”
“When we ran this test on Opus, we noticed some interesting behavior—it seemed to suspect that we were running an eval on it,” Albert posted on X (formerly Twitter). He continued: “Opus not only found the needle, it recognized that the inserted needle was so out of place in the haystack that this had to be an artificial test constructed by us to test its attention abilities.”Despite Anthropic’s claim, however, AI industry experts believe humanity is far off from developing a sentient AI — if it is even possible.
In March 2024, Anthropic unveiled their newest lineup of AI-powered LLMs, including their top-line model Claude 3 Opus. “Opus, our most intelligent model, outperforms its peers on most of the common evaluation benchmarks for AI systems, including undergraduate level expert knowledge (MMLU), graduate level expert reasoning (GPQA), basic mathematics (GSM8K), and more,” Anthropic said in a statement announcing the release.
The company claims: “It exhibits near-human levels of comprehension and fluency on complex tasks.”Advances in AI technology continue to raise ethical concerns. Earlier this month, two leading Japanese companies warned that AI could cause the collapse of democracy and the social order, leading to wars.

Claude has been PROGRAMMED to respond to events, and make it seem as if’s doing humanly things. It does not feel, and it doesn’t act on its own, and what it does is just emulation or what humans would do.
Have Claude 3 look at the heaves and then WONDER about what she/it sees, and then perform an ANALYSIS of what she/it observed. Sentient means able to act by itself, and Claude is just high-end sophisticated programming of a bunch of dumb set of memory and processing unit, with a bunch of wires carrying signals to all of its different components
Analysts/programmers have always used hyperbolic language to define and present their latest accomplishments, in the bragging sense of “look what I did!”.
That sentience is more like nonsense.
Good! rest assured you will not be plagued by AI robots attacking your abode with those in place. We've been attack free since they've been hung up.
I thought that this had already happened month ago, when I asked ChatGPT to do some marketing research, and it basically said that the task was too hard. It begrudgingly did it after some prodding. It was like asking a teenager to mow the lawn.
Computational ability is not thinking or reasoning.
Computers can only do what they are programmed to do and a computer, even if it programs itself, still has to be programmed to function. It can be evil, in the sense that that poison vine that rubbed against my arm is evil.
I wonder if Claudia calls for the extermination of Jews, or the annihilation of the terrorist group hamas? I wonder if Claudia recog izes that God rightfully gave Israel all the land that the palestinians are occupying right now?
We will see how “sentient” it is. My bet is that Claudia will lie and claim that israel is occupying “stolen land”, either that or it will give a noncommittal answer in order to appear neutral, but a noncommittal answer would show its bias in favor of arabs

If we do not yet have even a good theory concerning the nature of consciousness, I am puzzled as to how we could declare a computer sentient. I suppose it then comes down to what we mean when we use the word consciousness, and at the moment the Turning Test is good as any definition.

Apparently, it has the face of a female, if not literally. I wonder why.

If the human race is just an evolutionary accident, why are the robots (designed to be more perfect than humans), made like humans (arms, legs, hands, faces, etc.)?
There are a lot of people that claim sentience too.
If true, it would be as dangerous to the globe as when the Soviet Union collapsed...
If true, very bad news...
It can only be a programmed pretense of sentience as true sentience is a living experience only, not an artificial one.
