This is a different kind of cancel culture.
Even President Ronald Reagan’s failed assassin-turned-folk singer is too afraid to step foot in the Big Apple — calling it a “cesspool of crime” after canceling an upcoming gig.
“I’m afraid of New York City and I just don’t want to go there right now,” John Hinckley Jr. — who tried to kill Reagan in 1981 — told The Post days after pulling the plug on a June show scheduled on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
Hinckley announced the performance on X last week but pulled out because “he said New York is a ‘dangerous mess’ and ‘had a bad vibe,'” the event organizers told ticket holders for the unannounced venue in a bizarre email obtained by The Post.

World is weirder than I previously thought.
New York City is way too dangerous for assassins.
If it’s too dangerous for an attempted murderer of a US president, that has to mean NYC is pretty bad off.
For shooting a sitting President and grievously wounding 2 others Hinckley should have went for a ride in the electric chair a long time ago.
At least he has succeeded in murdering something. Music.
What the world needs now
Is another folk singer
Like I need a hole in my head
Too bad his ‘music career’ doesn’t fall under the ‘Son of Sam’ law...
Well, if she had come out of the closet earlier, the shooting might not have ever happened.
And on the other side of the coin, rich white kids raised in the Bubble aren’t going to be treated like poor black kids across the river.
He almost pulled off what would have been the most significant assassination in history.

LOL - Bacharach redux
In what other country in history has a Emperor/King/President/Prime Minister’s assassin - who actually was able to wound the leader - been able to later in life roam free, not to mention pursue a career in the entertainment business?
Anyone know of any historical precedent?
I assume in 99.999% of all previous cases, the culprit was hanged, shot, quartered, etc... within days after the event
That’s right.
“One type of song that has come into increasing prominence in recent months is the folk song of protest. You have to admire people who sing these songs. It takes a certain amount of courage to get up in a coffee house or a college auditorium and come out in favor of the things that everybody else in the audience is against, like peace and justice and brotherhood and so on.”

Tom’s still with us at 96.
So who’s the better songwriter? Hinckley or Charlie Manson? Manson released an album in 1970 (recorded in 1968 at Brian Wilson’s home studio). And he had groupies too. Hinckley released in album in 2022, but I don’t know if he has that Manson star quality. Is American Idol ready for a new genre? Hey, people would watch. (Cynical but true.)
Kerosene Hat, very good album

Both of them?
