Yup- its ironic- the Moody’s themselves were never big drug users, except for weed and trying LSD to see what it was like they were not into drugs yet Ray Thomas died at 76YO, Graeme Edge 80YO and now Pinder at 82YO
Ping.
“Melancholy Man” is about Pentecost.
Here is what AI says about the song:
The Moody Blues’ song “When You’re a Free Man” is indeed about Timothy Leary, a former Harvard University instructor and research psychologist who became a prominent advocate for the use of LSD in the 1960s. The song was released in 1969 and is a tribute to Leary’s ideals and philosophy.
The Moody Blues’ song “When You’re a Free Man” is a sentimental ballad that explores themes of hope, reunion, and longing for a better future. The lyrics depict a yearning for a time when freedom will be regained, both personally and collectively. The song’s introspective verses explore themes of friendship, love, and the desire for peace in a troubled world.
The song’s lyrics are characterized by their poetic and philosophical tone, with the band’s signature blend of classical and rock influences. The song’s melody is soaring and emotive, with Justin Hayward’s distinctive vocals delivering a heartfelt performance.
The song’s message is one of hope and optimism, with the lyrics encouraging listeners to hold on to the idea of a better future and to work towards a world where everyone is free. The song’s chorus, with its repetition of the phrase “When you’re a free man,” becomes a rallying cry for the listener, urging them to hold on to the hope of a brighter future.
Overall, “When You’re a Free Man” is a powerful and moving song that showcases the Moody Blues’ ability to craft songs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable.
Unfortunately, that is not what life is about, but the promise of the Lord is an everlasting one that has those qualities. But it takes learning about life as a human to see what it takes to have such an environment. 🙂👍
G Gordon Liddy was apparently behind the arrest of Timothy Leary for possession. Later after Leary got out of prison they went on tour together in a debate format, arguing the various social issues of the 70s. It was a big ticket event of the time... billed somewhat as ultra-right vs. ultra-left. Leary was nothing like the leftists of today, he was very libertarian with his ‘turn on, tune in and drop out’ which is hardly collectivist, more nihilist actually.
Thank you for the PING, Dear One!
I loved it when you featured them and told their stories along with the music!
You brought them alive for us!
P.S. But your “Great American Songbook” was da bomb!
That took not only a tremendous knowledge of music, but also
details of the composers and artists who made their songs great!
Thank you, for the gift you gave us!
I saw a documentary once where one of them, I think it was John Lodge was expressing surprise that some people sort of saw them as gurus... he said they had no agreement amongst themselves about spiritual matters... he said ‘two were Christians, one a Buddhist and an agnostic and a mystic. (paraphrased)’ He said that spirituality was involved in their music but they didn’t feel they had any special message they were trying to convey.
(MUMBLE MUMBLE)
(BLUSH BLUSH)
I heard Graeme Edge the drummer talk about how there were “two Christians, an agnostic, an atheist” in the group.
In the same interview Edge said the band realized things were getting out of hand when some guy got on his knees in front of Edge backstage and pleaded for Edge to bestow his blessing on him.
heh... that’s funny.. and it was Edge who the agnostic...
>>> who was....
"I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band!"
If they had any “message” it was perhaps that.. ie: music is important. Plato believed it was...
LOL
You’re wonderful!
G. Gordon Liddy was one of my heroes. I bought large numbers of his book “Will” and gave them out to my friends.
What I remember from Leary’s lecture was his telling the audience that if they tried LSD, they should have someone in the room with them to protect them against bad trips.
Very sad. We are losing so many of our favorite musicians! :(
