AIN’T EASY BEING GREENE — Turns out it wasn’t a momentary lapse of judgment: DONALD TRUMP yesterday evening defended Speaker MIKE JOHNSON for the second time in as many weeks amid a swirl of speculation about his future atop the House GOP.
After spending the day holed up in a Manhattan courtroom (more on that in a second), the former president told Real America’s Voice radio host John Fredericks that Johnson is “trying very hard” and “a very good person.”
“Well, look, we have a majority of one, OK?” Trump said, extending Johnson some grace and echoing the speaker’s own explanation for working with Democrats on a host of issues. “It’s not like he can go and do whatever he wants to do.”
Trump even praised Johnson for turning some foreign aid to Ukraine into a loan (a maneuver we previewed as a Trump sop weeks ago) and for standing “very strong with me” on urging NATO countries to up their defense spending commitments. More from Meridith McGraw
The remarks come just a day after Rep. MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE (R-Ga.) vowed on Fox News to force out Johnson one way or another. And it came just hours after MAGA chieftain STEVE BANNON claimed that Trump was in fact “furious about what happened” with Johnson’s support of foreign-aid spending and that he had been manipulated by “cuck political operatives” into backing the rookie speaker.
What does it all mean for Greene? Under her theory of the case, conservative lawmakers are home in their districts right now getting an earful from their constituents about Johnson’s betrayal of the MAGA cause, bucking them up to join Greene in a motion to vacate when they return to Washington next week.
But after first hearing Trump say, “I stand with the speaker,” and now, “I think he’s trying very hard,” it’s going to be awfully hard to deny that Trump is being crystal clear in signaling what he wants — or rather, doesn’t want: a messy election-year coup that throws the House into chaos and again reminds voters what MAGA governance can look like.
Trump publicly supported Ronna until he gained the leverage to dump her.
Trump is publicly supporting Johnson until there is enough leverage to replace Johnson and to maintain a majority.
Statehoods, court packing, amnesty and election law modifications are all at stake right now as we maintain a one seat majority and as Johnson continues to to block those issues from coming to the floor.
It's been coming for decades. Look at it like a blessing, and here we are sitting in the front row.
This is an excellent point.
I’m the base you are a propagandist.
Rand Paul should stfu about Trump because RP’s not going to be president and the election of Trump is a lot more important.
Can’t have it both ways his Dad could just be sweet talking or something. I dont know.
3d CHESS again, perhaps
It’s a dangerous play because it risks alienating supporters.
You are a Neocon, deficit spender aligned with McConnell and Johnson. That makes you a GOPe jock sniffer.
The fix is in is my best explanation of the situation.
I’m relaxed and at peace I voted today got to write-in “Volodymyr Zelensky” in the Republican Primary.
Rand is opposed to unpaid foreign aid and has spent the last 14 years opposing it .He means it
why should he “stfu” he’s a senator and has a right to be heard earned at the ballot box
That’s because the dems are the party of the CIA. Of course they can do what they want. They want the same thing as the Deep State.
We have GOT to come to terms with the reality that as long as the CIA can threaten, frame, bribe, etc Congress-critters and Senators we’re going to end up with crap for a legislative branch. And the same thing with the judicial branch. We can’t just send new people to the meat grinder and expect them to come out as something besides sausage.
For the first time in forever we have a potential President who has already faced the full fury of the whole world’s globalists (led by our own CIA) and hasn’t backed down. He doesn’t need the treasonous media and he knows exactly what we as a nation are up against. He’s put enough of his own blood, sweat, and tears into this country for me to trust his direction on how to get out of this mess.
Plus, he met privately with Johnson and we don’t know what kind of plan they may have discussed.
I’m willing to wait and see on this one, even while despising the position we’re in right now. I do think we need to let reason and deliberate care rule the day rather than emotions. We can’t afford to be governed by our emotions, with the Deep State doing everything they can trying for Civil war as well as world war. We HAVE to discipline ourselves to dig down to the real roots of what is happening here and then stick with a plan that can get our country back.
I respect MTG and I’m glad she is saying this stuff because it really IS atrocious, what’s going on. But I also think that the anger and emotions have GOT to be channeled into Sun Tsu’s art of war, if we’re going to win our country back. We won’t retreat; we will live to fight another day. And the whole country must know: there WILL be another day and we WILL be ready for it.
“or rather, doesn’t want: a messy election-year coup that throws the House into chaos and again reminds voters what MAGA governance can look like.”
It’s politics, even Trump has to play that game. I don’t see how Trump could be pleased when he was all over truth telling Congress to kill FISA. Nothing of consequence will occur between now and the election, let Johnson ride out the remainder of the year then get rid of him.
It’s possible but you dont know the future there will be more betrayals from the “war time” Speaker
Now Trump is defending him and the House GOP , possibly the most unpopular bunch of losers ever
Not a bad idea :P
Popcorn time on FR!
Good post but i dont know what the whole point is of getting power if you’re not going to exercise it.
Trump - if he wins - will sign bills all day long funding his nemesis and agencies like the CIA
You should perhaps support someone who wants to dismantle it and abolish it (like Rand)
Maybe in 2028 !
Probably feels it’s a battle best delayed with everything else happening.
I’ve seen a few people here say they will sit this one out especially down the ballot
It’s frustrating Trump is defending the House GOPers who are - in my view - out of control
Where’s the link? Why should anyone believe this?
Sweet talking to the media. Saying nice things. It’s his instinct I think but it’s misplaced...
I think its obvious that they want Johnson replaced so the dems can un-certify Trump as a candidate. Johnson is mad its taken so long to get himself ousted, so watch as everyday he does something even more outrageous.
They want to make it so intolerable that the people demand he be forced out no matter what the outcome. This way we will take the blame for dems having the power to do it.
