Competition in the Tex-Mex and Mexican segments of the restaurant space has been fierce in recent years, led by fast-food chains Yum Brands' Taco Bell (YUM) and Chipotle (CMG) .
Taco Bell is king with about 7,936 locations in the U.S., according to data company ScrapeHero. Chipotle has a good size of the market with 3,398 units. Other major players include Qdoba with over 750 locations and Del Taco (TACO) with over 600.
Certain Mexican casual restaurant chains have had financial difficulties trying to compete and needed to file for bankruptcy. Chevy's Fresh Mex, which had as many as 37 locations filed bankruptcy a couple of times, most recently in 2018, and currently has 18 locations. Other Mexican chains have filed bankruptcy and shuttered permanently, including Don Pablo's, which filed bankruptcy in 2017 and closed down in 2019. Another, Chi-Chis, filed bankruptcy and closed permanently in 2004.

Forgot to mention $20 wages that pop up Taco stands and Trucks don’t have to pay.
believe it or not I live in Oceanside 50 miles from the order and we don’t have a decent mexican restaurant But we have 5 of the -—ertos you mentioned.
These ‘journalists’ need to get to the point Tijuana Flats is the one filing bankruptcy. TF is okay, but I love the local chain Taco Bus and the food truck and now brick and mortar place Rene’s Tacos. (Rene started Taco Bus and now runs Rene’s).
Just cuss at the ticket machine until you get enough paper.
In LA food trucks rule. You can even get Korean/Mexican fusion
I’ll take a gas station or indy barbacoa street taco over a chain anytime. Best Mex in DFW, and there’s one on every corner.
Taco Bell:
Soft beef taco, combo burrito and medium drink, almost $9.
No thanks….
Not to worry,
a gazillion illegals are here and continue to be imported to take up the slack.

Ridin with Biden..
Hard to find a meal almost anywhere under $10 anymore.
Isn't it the result of the Good times of the Bidenomics we are having? 🤓
Sure ain’t good times that I can see..
They have it near me. The McBundle. It’s 3.25.
It’s something like $3.00 deal or $3.00 bundle here.. but like I said it’s not on the app or advertised in any way. Have it on the kiosk and will let you order it at the counter or in drive through if you ask as well… don’t recall if it’s on the drive through sign or not.
That would be cool.
One of the few benefits of living in San Diego is the abundance of excellent (and still reasonably affordable) Mexican restaurants, --many of which are little more than holes in the wall with very limited seating and that do most of their business doing take-out.
And the closer you get to the border, the cheaper and better they are.
I always liked Taco Johns better than Taco Bell. Just my taste fast food Mexican.
For me, it was when the did away with Taco Light.
I think Taco Johns started showing up in the Quad Cities (Rock Island, Moline IL, and Davenport, Bettendorf IA) in the 80s or 90s.
My family ate there a few times. And yes, I agree the food was better than TB. I think I recall a flat hard shell ‘cinnamon taco’.
Haven’t been to one in at least 15 years I suppose.
The flat fried cinnamon taco with an apple spread was a Taco Grande, which was tasty, but they don’t sell anymore. TJs is a Wyoming company, which I thought had surprisingly good Mexican food while on a visit out there. They just opened a store in Kenosha.
They likely don’t have to worry about minimum wage abs other labor laws and regulations.
Or health and safety regs..
