SALT LAKE CITY — The NHL is likely coming to Utah next season. That's what Arizona Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong told his team on Friday. Armstrong informed Coyote players the franchise would be moving following the season, according to multiple reports. Arizona Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo has agreed to sell the team to the NHL, which, in turn, will sell the team to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith. However, sources told KSL.com that a deal with Smith Entertainment Group is not done and there remains a long way to go on the matter. There is confusion, sources said, about why the Coyotes players were informed that a move was imminent at this time.

An ice hockey team in Arizona is an affront to the global warming, climate change crowd. On the other hand, does the Great Salt Lake ever freeze over?
The Utah Sister Wives...first 100 fans get a trophy wife!
Never, it is way too salty.
bout time! Those coyotes have been helping illegal aliens cross the border for too long!
Makes sense. You try keeping ice frozen in the desert!
The Arizona franchise in the NHL has been a disaster since it was established in the 1990s. I know why the NHL leadership has been beating a dead horse for so long (it’s a large TV market), but sooner or later reality has to set in.
The NHL has worked pretty well in Florida, Tampa Bay has been very successful lately, won a couple of Stanley Cups.
This would help Dale Murphy bring an MLB team To STL as well.
“I think there are a lot of Shysters in Florida.”
Yes, wasn’t this year’s NHL final Las Vegas vs. Florida? It must cost a pretty penny to keep their rinks and arenas at the proper temps!
Heh...
Salt Lake City seems too small of a market. And Mormons won’t like 5 minute fighting majors…
They didn’t seem to mind so much with the Baker-Fancher wagon train in 1857.
Too soon?
I live in Jacksonville and they’ve had a minor league hockey team for quite a few years now and the wife I have been to a couple of games, they average 6000-8000 per game and are successful
SLC is a growing market. And they will be #2 option (after Utah Jazz).
In Phoenix or Atlanta, they'll be #8 or #9 because there are other things to do.
It may be bad for the booze sales. Mormons are not known for drinking.
They never managed to put a good product on the ice. A series of poor owners not able to invest in the team, and not able to generate fan excitement. Gary could just never find a real sports owner for the team, somebody who could afford to lose the money to get a team that could regularly get into the playoffs and maybe win a round. Something to excite the fans.
Sometimes it's about location.
