Scrabble: Mattel launches new version of game which is 'less competitive'

Mattel is to launch a new version of Scrabble which is designed to be more collaborative and accessible for those who find word games intimidating.

The new double-sided Scrabble board will still feature the original game for those who want to play the traditional version.

But the new game on the flip side will include helper cards, use a simpler scoring system and be quicker to play.

The new board, Scrabble Together, will also allow people to compete in teams.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, broadcaster Gyles Brandreth described the launch as "exciting news".

"We play the original game, but change is inevitable," said Brandreth, who co-hosts the language podcast Something Rhymes With Purple.

He added that the launch of the new iteration "doesn't deny the old version".

Good Lord, is nothing sacred?

Learn to read and spell. That will help.

Sheesh, dumbing down EVERYTHING.

From the article:

“The makers of Scrabble found that younger people, Gen Z people, don’t quite like the competitive nature of Scrabble”

New and Improved! With more curse words! Ebonics freely accepted and encouraged. Misspelled words are fine too. The new diverse, equitable and inclusive Scrabble board game. IF you are accused of cheating, we don't judge a little stabbing and gunfire.

I have found, in my life (I will be 70 at the end of August) that playing against people who are better than I am, improves my game.

My daughter and I will play Scrabble when we are together at home (she lives in another State). She is a great Scrabble player and I have learned from her by being beaten and realizing that I have been missing opportunities in the past.

Watch and learn. When you watch how someone else is playing the board, and beating you, you can learn techniques to do the same next time you play.

For those in need of a laugh, here’s the late, great Norm MacDonald talking about the time he played Scrabble with a crazy old man.

What is it, Twitter Scrabble? No vowels? Just three-letter acronyms because kids can't spell anymore?

It’s a two sided board. Why not have two games? I know most who like solitary games are introverts who rather never have groups of people playing a game.

A few years back I started playing the online “Words with Friends” game and a few times it rejected my word which I knew was a word and looked up in a paper dictionary to prove it was a word. Pissed me off so I just told my “friends” I was playing against I was “out” and deleted the app. I told them an app that stupid doesn’t deserve to be on my phone... ha ha ha.

Before there were two versions of Scrabble, there were two Scrabble dictionaries. The OWL (Official Word List) had all words that were in at least one of four different dictionaries including swear words, racial epithets, etc. The dictionary you could buy at Barnes & Noble had all the offensive words eliminated.

Then the PC crowd came in and eliminated all of the offensive words from the Official Word List. So no ebonics with or without the hard-R.

There are still some words allowed which are offensive, but are included if they have at least one inoffensive definition, e.g. BITCH and FAGGOT.

JEW, used as a verb, used to be a word seen on a lot of Scrabble boards because of its high scoring possibilities. That word was removed from the Official Word List, even though many of the people petitioning the Scrabble Assoc. to keep it in are Jews.

IRONY is still a valid Scrabble word.
