A second autopsy on Riley Strains has confirmed there was no water in his lungs, the family has revealed, increasing fears that he was dead when he entered the water.
The half-naked body of the 22-year-old student was hauled from the Cumberland River in Tennessee on Friday, 14 days after he vanished in Nashville on a night out.
An initial police autopsy found no signs of foul play, but no signs that he drowned either after leaving Luke's Bridge Food and Drink at 9.30pm on March 22.
Now a second autopsy commissioned by his family has added to the mystery as investigators await toxicology results.
'You know, I just I just hope that this doesn't get swept underneath the rug because the family deserves more answers than we have,' family friend Chris Dingman told NewsNation's Elizabeth Vargas Reports.
'I'm not a crime drama person, by no means. But usually water in the lungs means that, you know, they were alive when they went into the water.
'So more questions, we hope to get to get some answers with the toxicology.'
The family also want answers on why he was missing his trousers, boots, and billfold when his body was finally spotted under a rock eight miles downstream at 7.28am on Friday.
'Once again, one more question,' Dingman said. 'But unfortunately, the only thing that was found with him, as the Police stated in the report was the watch and the shirt.
'Everything else was not with him when he was found.'
The University of Missouri student was in the city with Delta Chi fraternity members for their annual spring formal when he was kicked out of the bar just after 9.30pm.
Strain told his friends that he would meet them back at their hotel, but was nowhere

I need a “this is my shocked face” image.
Can anyone out there explain the interest?
As I posted a week ago, half naked from the waist down, is not unusual, in a story such as this.
There’s a community within our society, that this seems to happen to, more than other communities.
Repost from state board by babble on:
“Dr. Michael Graham has examined dozens of bodies pulled from the Mississippi River throughout the 40 years he spent as St. Louis’ Medical Examiner.
The recently retired pathologist said the absence of water in the lungs of a body that has decomposed for that long is not unusual. A victim could still drown and be found without water in their lungs.
Many of the bodies pulled from rivers and other bodies of water are also found nude are partially nude, Graham said. Clothes and shoes can be pulled off by currents, get snagged by something in the water or possibly be weighed down by getting filled with sand.”

The toxicology report will tell the story.
He was drunk, perhaps on narcotics, walked towards Gay Street and passed out.
Can someone smarter than me explain this?
Or is this BS?
FR licensed pathologists with experience examining drowning victims are welcome to add color.

Metro Nashville Police Department spokesperson Kris Mumford said Strain’s death “continues to appear accidental” after a detective attended the first autopsy, The Tennessean reported Sunday. Mumford said toxicology results were pending, but there is no apparent foul play. The first autopsy won’t be complete until all testing is finished.
Since I am not a pathologist, I cannot.
If he was gay.
Like that stops anyone...
Was there a sudden appearance of a smiley face nearby?
“Like that stops anyone...”
Heh, heh...are you referring to a particular social site with the initials “FR”?
M-m-m-m-m-maybe...
Soooooo true!
So what was cause of death if not drowning?
Article suggests he must have been murdered, but there is another explanation. He may have died from head trauma after falling off a bridge. A drug addicted bum may have found his lifeless body, pilfered his clothing, and then shoved his body in the river.
Just because there was no water in his lungs does not mean he was murdered. It only means he died before being shoved in the river.
Another but wilder explanation is that he took off his clothes in a drunk stupor, THEN he fell and hit his head and died with his corpse weird position where he was teetering over the river. A strong gust of wind or a swinging tree limb or a couple of possums jump on his back and SPLASH in he goes.
The last is way too incredible but I am just bringing up possibilities, and it is possible.
Either he was murdered by a bum or a bum found his dead body. The mere absense of water in his lungs doesn’t clear that up one way or the other.
first reports said he’s had only one drink at the bar and was then thrown out.
maybe he was roofied.
