Meet the AbramsX: The Army's New Tank Might Be a Giant Waste of Money
The National Interest ^ | 3/20/24 | Harrison Kass

Posted on 03/20/2024 1:12:07 PM PDT by hardspunned

The AbramsX, an advanced variant of the M1 Abrams tank, represents a significant technological leap with its hybrid electric diesel engine, reduced crew requirement, and AI integration. While promising improved fuel economy and modernized capabilities, its adoption faces Pentagon skepticism over the relevance of tanks in future conflicts, particularly against China. The AbramsX's development underscores attempts to adapt to modern warfare's evolving landscape, balancing innovation with strategic considerations.

Cage isn’t 100 percent. But it is better to have the cage, than not.

They completely re-did the Su25 with the Su-25SM in 2012 or so.

It is basically the same airframe and all new bits.

FWIW, The Ukrainians evaluated the A10 and decided it offered no benefits and a number of issues compared to the newer SU25.

[Uh, Saddam, with no air force or air defense after the first day was not the 2024 Russians or Chicoms. You might want to reconsider your position or find an example that in some way reflects the reality of today.]

Saddam had a 550 fighter jet air force and a huge SAM net. He lost because the US had better gear. Saddam stopped sending fighters up on the correct assumption that they would be slaughtered, and was mainly concerned, after losing hundreds, with keeping what he had left, on the correct assumption that the US would not invade Iraq to topple him.

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/gulf/appendix/whitepaper.html
[The Air Force flew over 65,000 sorties during Operation Desert Storm and accounted for 31 of 35 kills against fixed wing aircraft. It’s estimated that during the Air Campaign, coalition forces destroyed over 400 Iraqi aircraft, including 122 that flew to Iran, without a single loss in air-to-air combat. The Air Force flew 59% of all sorties, with 50% of the assets and incurred only 38 % of the losses. The mission capable rate for Air Force aircraft was 92 % -— higher than our peacetime rate.]

The main reason Ukraine is having difficulty with the Russians is the fact that Biden has withheld aircraft and SAM batteries, tanks, and artillery. He is, in effect, sending as little military equipment as he can get away with, choosing to send mostly non-military aid. In equipment supply terms, it’s almost as if the Russians had never invaded. By contrast, the Russians sent 500 MiGs, 2000 tanks to Communist Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

hybrid electric diesel engine

Why? Is there a legitimate military need for a hybrid electric diesel engine in a tank, or are we now trying to keep the next war as environmentally friendly as possible?

> AI Integration

Good thing thing they got that buzz phrase incorporated.

> You have to reduce their ground direct fire profile by making them flatter.

That really doesn’t matter as much anymore. What can be hit can be killed. In the future, one would have to expect that any incoming weapon is going to be smart enough to choose it’s most advantageous aspect of attack.

“The AbramsX, an advanced variant of the M1 Abrams tank, represents a significant technological leap with its hybrid electric diesel engine...”

Good to hear that the military is moving towards a more ‘green’ approach to fighting its wars, even if it means many thousands of AMERICANS needlessly dying in the battlefields, after all it’s for a great cause, saving the planet.

And so, again, I will state a MAJOR REASON why I oppose US involvement in Ukraine, or any other war that doesn’t threaten us or our interests, is because the people RUNNING THE WAR are the same military-haters that I grew up with. The LAST THING they want is a military that is capable of fighting and winning.

The history is that there is an innovation in weapons, and the tank design is adapted to survive. Then the weapons change again...

Shape charge weapons can be defended against if you can disrupt the explosively formed projectile.

The thing they need to think about is Russia announced in 2023 they were increasing Krasnopol production by 25x.

There is no tank on earth that can stand up to a top hit from a 152mm. And seems unlikely to be developed.

The only reason I could think of for hybrid is low end toque to get the beast off from a dead stop faster.

I drove a Porsche like this and it damn near killed me being unprepared for the initial acceleration.

No clue if that would be a benefit in a tank.

Yeah it’s not optimal but it sure beats the alternative.

I actually do agree. If a MILITARY-RELATED case can be made showing that a Hybrid has more advantages than disadvantages (which are many, starting with complexity), in a combat scenario, then it would make sense to go that direction. For starters, a tank able to operate on batteries would have a far lower heat signature than a tank with an active engine, something we in the battlefield worry quite a bit about, these days.

I would mainly be worried about fire. A battery is worse than a fuel tank.

“I would mainly be worried about fire. A battery is worse than a fuel tank.”

Yep, that too. Even a 22 round could spell the end of that tank, including its crew.

The war in Ukraine is providing the world with real war lessons if our military leaders would learn.

Drones our today’s air superiority, and as someone else mentioned tanks are today’s battleships.

“ represents a significant technological leap…”

FALSE.

Represents a significant wast3 of time now, and human lives in the future.

The big question isn’t necessarily the quality and cost effectiveness of weapons systems being created.
The most relevant question now is whether the government will turn those weapons on its own citizens.
