Frank Rodriguez in San Francisco says he has been dealing with a difficult LG fridge since 2021. “This one cost me $2,000 and it’s been a nightmare,” he said.
He says it’s not freezing well. Techs have repeatedly tried to fix it, but haven’t. Frank says he’s asked for a replacement or a refund. But that hasn’t happened.
*snip*
LG says it put an arbitration notice on the box. It’s now asking a federal judge to require individual fridge owners to move their case to arbitration -- in private. But owners we interviewed say they never saw the box because delivery people unboxed their fridge.

My son went through 4 of them before he got one that worked. He lost 2 fridges full of food, and spent a fair amount of time yelling at the store manager, but he finally got a working refrigerator.
All of our appliances are LG, washer, dryer, fridge, stove microwave and dishwasher.
So far the fridge and washer are the only ones that have failed. We even bought a second LG refrigerator to replace the dead one..............
Our fridge let things get warm. I called a repairman and the mother board was $700. It was replaced and worked well for a couple years. Same thing happened, and we took a lot of food out of the freezer for a better air flow. Worked fine ever since. I have wondered if the mother board was actually bad.
Sorry but the Refrigerator owner is an idiot. A compressor failure is a major issue and he would have saved a lot of money simply buying a new refrigerator.
Yeah we tried the unplug thing first with no joy......a new circuit board was plan B......what a relief when the thing comes back online right?.....sheesh
Do Koreans believe in DEI? Did they lower their standards to hire Indian IT people?
Last year, we bought an LG Washer/Dryer combo and an LG Dishwasher. We love them. They have been great. Recently, we purchased an LG refrigerator. Before it was delivered, I found several articles about the LG Linear compressor that is included in some LG refrigerators. It isn’t in all of them, but it is in several. They were sued in a class-action case about 3-4 years ago over the linear compressor. They settled that lawsuit and claimed they had fixed the issue with the linear compressors. Yet, in the last year, the same exact issues have occurred with models with the linear compressor. We decided not to take a chance, and we canceled our order and bought a different brand. It appears that the linear compressor is garbage.
Exactly. 🙂
Ah, yes. They were probably made in America, back when workers took pride in their products. I miss those days.
Ive had lg washers and dryers for over a decade and my lg refrigerator is 10x more reliable than the 4 year old samsung I sold for $50.
It’s ‘planned obsolescence’. They have engineers to design things that will last only so long. That way you will have to buy a new one.
We’ve had Sears/Kenmore, Whirlpool and GE appliances. They all crapped out near ten years.
Where we used to live, across town, we had a Sears/Kenmore central air unit that lasted almost exactly ten years to the day. We had pampered and babied that thing, cleaned it out from sand and leaves and washed it thoroughly with soap and water every spring and fall, and it still failed.
Sears/Kenmore was actually Whirlpool back in those days.
Nowadays, as I understand it, Kenmore is LG and many others...............
Seven years on our LG before it died...
Went back to a Whirlpool....so far, so good, but who knows in this day and age.
FWIW, just for backup, we have an old, old Admiral fridge out in the garage that still works as good as new. It’s a simple, straightforward design and obviously without all the funky computer BS. That thing is older than our grown kids that have our grandkids....lol.
I had two LG media players fail for no reason and with no support. So I won’t buy anything from them ever again.
Our GE refrigerator was new in 1978 and is going strong with two minor repairs over its life.
LG has had massive problems with their refrigerator’s linear compressors.
We bought a Frigidaire Gallery model less than a year ago and the plastic used in the drawer slides is so crappy that every single shelf slide wheel has broken off, and Frigidaire won’t cover it under warranty because they claim it was the cause of ‘abuse.’
Most modern appliances have an electronic circuit board, which makes them very sensitive to power surges. About 15 years ago, the repairman for my brand new dishwasher suggested getting a small computer surge protector for everything that had a digital display. The surge protectors are about the size of a cigarette pack and cost less than $10. I have not had to replace an appliance since I took his advise, but I have had to replace one surge protector (A power surge fried it.).
Yep. We’re going to be in the market for a new stove, dishwasher, washer and dryer over the next year or so. I’ve already decided that we’re getting the simplest, dumbest models possible.
If it has a control panel that looks like something out of the space shuttle, it ain’t coming to our house.
That’s the way to go, and it is also much cheaper.
The arbitration stuff is also in the manual. We never saw the delivery box, either. Delivery removes it before moving the fridge into the house.
Pay it off in 12 months and
1. it is interest free, and
2. If we have to wait for arbitration we can replace this fridge and be able to afford it, while waiting (unless it dies before that!).
So far, fridge works well...
My LG didn’t come in a box it had styrofoam edges on it and was shrink wrapped. The ice maker makes weird noises but the temp seems consistent. And my wife watches it like a hawk cuz the Samsung we had would fluctuate between 30° and 51°.
