The driver thought he hit a deer.
A kangaroo died after authorities say it was struck by a vehicle early Wednesday morning in eastern Oklahoma.
The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office said that Deputy Jeff Neighbors was patrolling the Liberty area north of Roland when he saw a kangaroo jump out of the woods and onto the higher before being hit by a passing vehicle.
Advertisement The driver thought he hit a deer, and the sheriff's office said he was "shocked" when he learned he had hit a kangaroo.
Sister station 40/29 News reported that a family later claimed the kangaroo's body, saying it had been their pet.
"I'm not sure how it got out of their property, but, you know, it's like a dog," Sheriff Larry Lane. "You know, they get to be part of the family, you know."
The family told 40/29 News they're having a tough time with their loss.

The EMT asked skeptically, "What kangaroo?" The victim then pointed at a nearby fence and said, "THAT kangaroo." And there it was, bouncing up and down, eager for another round.
Am reminded of the Warner Bros. cartoon in which Sylvester takes on a kangaroo, thinking it to be a gigantic mouse...
Kangaroos are comical in appearance — but they are natural punchers and kickers. Most people would do no better than Sylvester against a kangaroo.
Clearly Oklahoma is being overrun by kangaroos. To get the population under control they will need to introduce Australia’s apex predator, the platypus.
That’s a big mousie.🤪
At least this time they acknowledged the possibility. For one of the ones back in the 70s they tried to convince everyone that they were actually seeing deer with their front legs shot off.
Kangaroos in Wisconsin are only slightly more common than alligators.
What I dont get is why so many of these articles claim they are circus escapees when Baraboo stopped being an over wintering spot long before some of these sightings and yet they will point out that these things cant make it through the winter. Shrug
