The driver thought he hit a deer.

A kangaroo died after authorities say it was struck by a vehicle early Wednesday morning in eastern Oklahoma.

The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office said that Deputy Jeff Neighbors was patrolling the Liberty area north of Roland when he saw a kangaroo jump out of the woods and onto the higher before being hit by a passing vehicle.

Advertisement The driver thought he hit a deer, and the sheriff's office said he was "shocked" when he learned he had hit a kangaroo.

Sister station 40/29 News reported that a family later claimed the kangaroo's body, saying it had been their pet.

"I'm not sure how it got out of their property, but, you know, it's like a dog," Sheriff Larry Lane. "You know, they get to be part of the family, you know."

The family told 40/29 News they're having a tough time with their loss.

In Australia, road killed kangaroos are as common as road killed deer in Wisconsin.

"Deputy Jeff Neighbor... saw a kangaroo jump out of the woods and onto the higher..."

I think I see the problem.

Who knew Ike & Tina were singing about kangaroos?

“Baffled”? I thought I hit a deer, but, I’ll be damned, it was a kangaroo! If the “bafflement” extended farther than that, then the driver is an idiot

If you own a kangaroo and don't want it to go roaming on the highways, you should tie it down.

A few years ago my brother heard a story from an EMT about a run he made to patch up the victim of a beating on an evening in a semi-rural area east of Orlando, Florida. As the EMT tended to cuts and bruises on the victim's face, he explained that after a few beers, he hopped the fence to swap punches with the kangaroo next door -- and got badly thrashed.

The EMT asked skeptically, "What kangaroo?" The victim then pointed at a nearby fence and said, "THAT kangaroo." And there it was, bouncing up and down, eager for another round.

Am reminded of the Warner Bros. cartoon in which Sylvester takes on a kangaroo, thinking it to be a gigantic mouse...

Kangaroos are comical in appearance — but they are natural punchers and kickers. Most people would do no better than Sylvester against a kangaroo.

Clearly Oklahoma is being overrun by kangaroos. To get the population under control they will need to introduce Australia’s apex predator, the platypus.

Kangaroos are surprisingly common in Wisconsin. This article actually misses at least one, possibly two that I knew of.

At least this time they acknowledged the possibility. For one of the ones back in the 70s they tried to convince everyone that they were actually seeing deer with their front legs shot off.

Kangaroos in Wisconsin are only slightly more common than alligators.

What I dont get is why so many of these articles claim they are circus escapees when Baraboo stopped being an over wintering spot long before some of these sightings and yet they will point out that these things cant make it through the winter. Shrug
