An autistic boy was shot dead by police in California after he ran towards them with a bladed gardening tool, according to officials.
Harrowing bodycam footage shows the moment Ryan Gainer, 15, runs out of his Apple Valley in San Bernardino county on Saturday and towards the deputies.
A deputy is heard saying, 'Hey get back! Get back or you're gonna get shot,' before opening fire.
Police showed up at his home after receiving a 911 call reporting the teen was assaulting family members and damaging property, as reported by KTLA.
According to an official report, Gainer charged at the officers with the five-foot-long gardening tool as soon as they arrived.
A deputy said he tried to get away but opened fire after the teen chased after him.
'Without provocation, Gainer raised the bladed end of the tool and ran toward the deputy,' the release stated.
'The deputy retreated, and Gainer chased the deputy in an attempt to assault him with the bladed end of the tool.'
Officers provided medical aid until paramedics arrived, but the teen was later declared dead at the hospital.
No deputies were injured in the incident, which is under investigation by the police department's specialized investigations division.
During the 911 call, Gainer's sister reported that he was attacking one of their siblings and trying to break a window and door.

What's so unfortunate about this? If someone is about to to kill a cop, kill them first.
Who was the genius that let the 15 year old get ahold of the bladed “weapon”.
Nowadays, the police aren’t your friend.
Taser? Mace? Shillelagh? Marlon Perkins’ wildlife net?
Don’t want him shot and killed? Better figure something out.

The family DID figure it out. Good thing they did. They figured it was better to call the cops, risk having the teen shot, and not one of the innocent family members scythed up.
““This is one of those cases where they could have shot the kid in the leg…”
Did you forget the sarcasm tag, or do all your life experiences come from watching TV?”

Well now Revel has a point to an extent. How many cops are good at taking out knees?
My Grandmother, in 1972.
Very true.
“The deputy retreated, and Gainer chased the deputy in an attempt to assault him with the bladed end of the tool.”
The 15 year old was adult sized and charging with a “long bladed garden tool” that was easily capable of killing the deputy. I spent 25 years frequently getting assaulted by violent members of our society with mental problems that hoped to kill me. By the grace of God none of them succeeded. The people here who believe that they could have handled this situation better... likely not had a full-on psycho nearly killing them.
I feel much sorrier for the deputy than this adult-sized “troubled teen’s” family. If you charge at an armed police officer with a big knife with a 5-foot handle capable of lopping off his head, you should expect to die.
Did you see the video where the kid burst from the front door waving the scythe and very rapidly closed the distance between him and the cop? I understand the cop shooting him.
“There are no situations so dire they cannot be made worse by the addition of a cop.”
Really? Why stop with shooting him in the leg? Couldn’t he have shot the weapon out of his hands? Maybe he could have shot the blade off the scythe! SMDH...
This guy’s partner failed. He is the one who should have taken the shot. The deputy was one step away from a possibly fatal blow, and had to twist around to take a shot while running!
Yeah. There's more to this story.
Or they could have just shot him once and reassessed at that point if more were necessary.
Is that you, Joe Biden?
The kid evidently had some psychological problems, no doubt there. And legally this was a good shoot. And yes, training tells officers if they have to shoot, you go after center mass. I am sure this officer will be haunted for years about killing a kid, however, if you don’t like the smell of garbage, why work as a trash man..... Why would anyone want to be a policeman in todays world.
No one, cops or civillians, are trained to shoot to wound. Because that implies you’re not in a deadly situation, and if you’re not, you can’t justify the use of deadly force (ie using your firearm). Now technically cops can shoot to wound, but they are also given greater lattitude in their official duties and have legal protections regular people don’t have.
So cops are supposed to be Annie Oakley?
You aim center-of-mass for a reason. When you're off by a couple of feet you might still hit something.
IMO, that applies to anyone.
The person welding the scythe is moving pretty damn fast. No way I can fault the cop for shooting.
Self defense . Pure and simple.
