Ukraine destroyed a Russian tanker that Moscow used for surveillance and for deploying first-person-view (FPV) drones in southern Ukraine, according to Kyiv's military.

Ukraine's air force conducted a "successful strike" on the Russian-flagged Mechanik Pogodin on Tuesday, Kyiv's navy said in a statement.

Ukraine said Russia's military was using the vessel as a command center, with the ship serving to launch FPV drones and to carry electronic warfare (EW) equipment. Kyiv said the use of the vessel for surveillance and control made the tanker a legitimate military target.

A brief video posted by Ukraine's armed forces appeared to show the moment of the strike on the tanker. The clip shows a large explosion on one end of the ship, and a dark cloud of smoke billowing up from the vessel. Pieces of debris can be seen crashing into the water surrounding the ship. Newsweek could not independently verify the footage.

"Thanks to the pilots for the successful combat work against the enemy control point!" Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, the head of the Ukrainian Air Force, said in a statement. Save it, you want to split hairs. No, it’s not breaking the formal written rules yet, but it sure violates the spirit of this site with it’s propagandizing, it’s the same as blog pimping, a practice not formally banned but disliked by most here.

Worldtraveler once upon a time: "I have not "complained."
That was your word.
I identified some of the content creators from publicly available information."

Of course you complained, it's the whole point of your stinkin' post -- you want to restrict or shut down what UMCRevMom@aol.com can or cannot post here.

Of course, I am 100% in favor of everyone here following all the rules in good faith, as enforced by our moderators and other posters.

But just because you can invent rules out of thin air, doesn't mean the rest of us have to follow your own personal rules.

Worldtraveler once upon a time: "I have not thrown "pro-Russia cr*p against the wall to see whatever might stick."
Again, your words."

I'd say that's all you've ever really done here.

Another outright lie.

Repeat: ANOTHER outright lie.

TRUTH: Only the site owners and operators can "restrict or shut down" any comment or comment poster.

The point of my identifying and documenting content creators by their own publicly available information seems to annoy you greatly.

And, at the end I am resigned that there will be people who want our lives and treasure to be spent on foreign wars with undeserving combatants on all sides (as they always are). I might have supported entering WWII against Germany without Pearl Harbor and Germany’s declaration of war, but other than that not a single war the US has entered has been justified as I see it.

I take more the position of the Army Special Forces motto, “De Oppresso Liber”, Latin for Free the Oppressed.

Its a little more complicated than that.

WWII was a product of WW1 to some extent. Germany had been humiliated and punished with loss of some of its most valuable land and natural resources. Of course, Hitler used other reasons to build his coalition which make him detestable, but the German people were badly aggrieved and ready for something to set things right.

Total agreement :)

“The war was in many respects a continuation, after an uneasy 20-year hiatus, of the disputes left unsettled by World War I.
The 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths incurred in World War II make it the bloodiest conflict, as well as the largest war, in history.

A gigantic mushroom cloud rising above Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, after a U.S. aircraft dropped an atomic bomb on the city, immediately killing more than 70,000 people.

Along with World War I, World War II was one of the great watersheds of 20th-century geopolitical history. It resulted in the extension of the Soviet Union’s power to nations of eastern Europe, enabled a communist movement to eventually achieve power in China, and marked the decisive shift of power in the world away from the states of western Europe and toward the United States and the Soviet Union.”

anton: "Just a few more billions and Russia will surrender."

Vlad the Invader is unlikely to ever "surrender", except in the sense of surrendering his own life to an assassin's bullet or a fall from his high balcony.

And the Russian people are notoriously obedient and willing to suffer, especially when most of the war's costs in blood are born by non-Russians, and economic conditions are not totally intolerable.
But at some point in time, Vlad the Invader will run out of non-Russians and Russian criminals he can push into the Ukrainian Meat Grinder, and the Russian economy is already stressed beyond normal limits, so, what is the straw that will break the bear's back?

As for the war's costs -- not counting the value of at least half a million Russian & Ukrainian lives destroyed and many millions displaced, including at least tens of thousands of Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russians -- the total, so far, is approaching $300 billion in aid, of which the US has contributed roughly 25%, with most of the rest coming from EU countries, plus about 5% in total from Japan, Korea, Australia, Canada and several others.

For comparisons, we can look at the costs of previous US wars when converted into the relative economic efforts required in today's (2022) dollars:

  1. $13.5 trillion, Revolutionary War ending 1783
  2. $..2.1 trillion, War of 1812 to 1815
  3. $....735 billion, Mexican War ending 1849
  4. $10.8 trillion, Civil War (both sides) ending 1865
  5. $....505 billion, Spanish American War ending 1899
  6. $..6.9 trillion, First World War through 1921
  7. $33.4 trillion, Second World War through 1945
  8. $..2.0 trillion, Korean War through 1953
  9. $..1.7 trillion, Vietnam War through 1975
  10. $....255 billion, Gulf War I 1991
  11. $..8.0 trillion, War on Terror through 2021.
  12. $....~75 billion aid to Ukraine + maybe $25 bil. related?
And that's just dollars, not lives destroyed or ruined.
In comparison, US aid to Ukraine has been a mere drop in the bucket.

anton: "And, the the Crimean Bridge will be ceded for $1 to all of the US sheep who drank the Zalensky Kool Aid."

Seriously, why are you babbling nonsense?
Your words make no sense at all, who thinks like that?

"Zalensky Kool Aid"?? Seriously?
Do you not understand the difference between an invader and a defender?
How is that even conceivably not clear to you?

"Crimean Bridge"?? Seriously?
No American, not one, cares about Vlad the Invader's Bridge to Crimea except we'd like to see it blown up, and are pretty sure it will be, at some point.

So, none of your argument here makes sense.
Did you intend it to?

anton: "And, at the end I am resigned that there will be people who want our lives and treasure to be spent on foreign wars with undeserving combatants on all sides (as they always are)."

Say what??
How are Ukrainians in any way less deserving of our support than was any other country ever invaded by an Evil Empire like Vlad the Invader's Russia?

Sure, anybody can argue how much support we should send Ukraine, but there should never be any doubt as to which side has our sympathies.

anton: "I might have supported entering WWII against Germany without Pearl Harbor and Germany’s declaration of war, but other than that not a single war the US has entered has been justified as I see it."

Do you remember that for two years, from 1939 until 1941, American Communists were just as isolationists as any conservative Republican, but in June of 1941 Communists suddenly, magically, all flipped sides from isolationists to interventionists, and why was that?
I'm certain you remember, and if you don't, then your parents did.

So, you are clearly a product of anti-American schooling, which failed in its basic purpose to teach civics and citizenship.

What you need to understand is this: while some Americans opposed every US war, beginning with the Revolutionary War, most Americans at the time of every war believed they were fighting a just and necessary war.
Sure, anybody can criticize anyone at any time for any reason -- some people have criticized Jesus Christ himself, you don't need to be a genius to do that -- but I would not deprecate any Americans who fought any of our wars for their motives or ethics, at least according to their own standards of that time.

anton: "WWII was a product of WW1 to some extent.
Germany had been humiliated and punished with loss of some of its most valuable land and natural resources."

Naw... that's 100% German propaganda lies.
The truth is that Germans were not punished nearly as badly for losing the First World War as Germans themselves had punished countries like Belgium, which they defeated in 1914, or Russia, defeated in 1917, or France, defeated in 1871.
By comparison, Germany got off relatively easy in 1919.

Indeed, that is exactly the problem which the Allies intended to correct in the Second World War.
After WWI, because they got off so easily, Germans did not feel defeated and so believed they didn't actually deserve any punishment.
What Germans wanted instead is what they thought US President Woodrow Wilson had offered them -- "Peace Without Victory" -- meaning, essentially, they'd keep everything they conquered by 1918.

That's why our war aims for the Second World War were "Unconditional Surrender", so there could never, ever, be a doubt as to who won and who lost that war.

anton: "but the German people were badly aggrieved and ready for something to set things right."

Of course, they were, because they believed German propaganda lies that:

  1. They had not been defeated in the First World War
  2. Therefore, they did not deserve to be punished the way they themselves had punished defeated countries.
  3. They were "stabbed in the back" by their own civilian leaders -- Germans didn't know it was actually Ludendorff himself who recommended surrender in October 1918.
Plus, for over five years after 1933, Hitler's strategy seemed brilliant -- "Conquest Without Consequences" -- as he marched his armies into the Rhineland (1936), Austria (1938) and Czechoslovakia (1939) with without serious opposition.

Of course, Germans were elated, how could they not be?

In today's world, Hitler's:

  1. Rhineland of 1936 = Putin's Chechnya of 2001
  2. Austria of 1938 = Putin's Georgia of 2008
  3. Czechoslovakia of 1938 = Putin's Crimea of 2014
  4. Poland of 1939 = Putin's Ukraine of 2022.
