New research has found that putting a smiley face emoji on a bill can bolster the average restaurant server’s tip by a whopping 11%, according to a study published last month in the International Journal of Hospitality Management.
“We establish that when emojis are included with tip suggestions during the payment transaction, customers tip at a higher percentage than when no emojis are included,” the authors state. Specifically, the largest increase in customer generosity came in scenarios where multiple emojis were shown with suggested tip amounts. Neutral faces accompanied lower gratuities and, as the recommended percentage grew, so did the emojis’ cheek-to-cheek smile.
At full-service restaurants, the presence of emojis saw rises in the average tip go from 22.86% to 25.38% — an overall 11% relative increase. Typically, a 18%-to-20% gratuity represents satisfaction.

Afternoon they were hung over and barely tipped at all!
Two of my kids worked as wait staff for different establishments. I know how hard they worked. I trained them early myself, because my family was in that business. I guess I’m one of those who only tip poorly when the service is subpar.
Show a little cleavage and be nice and friendly...
Jason at Olive Garden tried that last time.
Didn’t go well. For anyone.
Do you happen to know if a good quality cast iron skillet that doesn’t weigh a ton exists? I realize this may be a stupid question, but I find cast iron skillets ridiculously heavy. I do want to purchase one though. Thanks.
Hahah wait staff have known about this “trick” for as long as I’ve been alive.... you think its just chance that that waitress put a smiley face on your check when she dropped it off at your table?
Cast iron is heavy. No getting around it.
It’s because they think I’m hot and want me to follow them home, right?
Ugh… I had a waiter like that today at a breakfast place.
I won’t tell you the results. You must see to believe....
😜🤪😲

I've tried! It doesn't work!
Regards,
He probably did buy some.
People like that usually bury their stash next to a tree...................
I know they work hard but why should my tip be tied to food inflation and it general wage inflation?
And why should I tip fully when the waitress only does part of the job and I have to do the other part?
Restaurants institute QR code payment to save money. Newsflash: that goes both ways.
I only tip for the part of the job that I feel was worth the tip. If I have to bus my own table, the tip is less.
I am just saying that when someone comes to me, takes my order, answers my questions, brings the correct food to me, and is pleasant and cheerful, I will tip them well.
If the service isn’t all of those things, then I tip less.
If the waitstaff seems to go above and beyond, then I tip even better.
