Akira Toriyama, one of the most famous and influential mangaka of all time, has died. He was 68.
The news was confirmed by the official Dragon Ball website, in a letter addressed to creatives and fans across the world. Toriyama passed away a week ago on March 1, 2024, from an acute subdural hematoma.

Indeed, what a legacy he leaves behind. Even though it wouldn’t have been intentional, Dragon Ball Z was essentially a conservative anime, in the sense that it celebrated the nuclear family through and through.
Throughout all the years you have all these characters who meet, become enemies, fight each other, eventually become friends, marry one another and have children. When you watch the movie battle of the Gods there is something wholesome about all these former enemies getting together with their own families for Bulma’s Birthday party.
His influence amongst Japanese media is practically uncalculable currently, as he directly influenced or inspired the artists and writers of the top-selling manga not only in Japan, but worldwide.
To use an American metaphor, it’s no exaggeration to say that it would be the equivalent of Walt Disney passing away.
I’d say that he is more like Stan Lee. Without him, anime would not be the industry it is.

Same. It’s why I stick with it over western media these days. I mean not always perfect, there is some degenerate woke thrash amongst it but it’s more far and between but still miles ahead than what they’ll ram down your throat on Disney.

DragonBall follows the adventure of Goku, as a child. Even as a child, Goku is an impossible fighter to beat.
He is on an adventure with Bulma to collect 7 wish orbs, called Dragonballs. In this series, most of the characters are introduced. Usually as villains to start out, but Goku eventually wins them over as friends.
Then DragonBall Z is the same characters, but all grown up. The main villain in Z is a planet broker named Frieza, who sells planets after he has wiped all the life off, to whomever buys them.
It looks like they’re available on Hulu.

My kids and grandkids are going to heartbroken. They are all hardcore Dragonball fans. Everything except for the GT series were great.
