A West Virginia bus driver has been arrested for DUI after flipping it with 19 children on board - before berating cops who rescued them.
Jeffrey Brannon, 54, was charged with multiple counts of driving under the influence causing harm and child neglect resulting in injury, with several of the kids involved hospitalized.
Police were called to Route 16 at 6pm Monday after Brannon tipped over the bus when he lost control over the right edge of the highway and overcorrected.
Cops said that when they arrived he was 'yelling and acting aggressive' while still inside the vehicle, before admitting he was drunk, Trooper Cpl. Brian Young said.
Nineteen students were on the Calhoun County school system bus at the time, with one suffering a vertebrae fracture, one a leg injury, and another a concussion, according to a criminal complaint.
One of the students was rushed to hospital by helicopter and another was taken by ambulance, however the full number and extent of injuries is not known.
Young said that when he went to take Brannon's statement, he smelled alcohol on his breath, and said the driver confessed to being drunk when asked.
A field breath test produced a 0.161% blood alcohol level. Another test at the Grantsville State Police Detachment showed a blood alcohol level of 0.127%.
The legal limit in West Virginia is 0.08%, meaning his blood alcohol was well over double the legal limit at the time of the crash.
Calhoun County Superintendent Michael Fitzwater closed area schools on Tuesday in response to the crash, and said his 'immediate focus is on our students and their well-being.'

Was that wrong?
This is what happens when cousins marry.
It’s all relative.........................
SOB doesn’t have that excuse ... (not that it worked for Kramer ...)
SOB has a commercial driver license. They go over that stuff in great detail.
Commercial DUI is bad enough. Commercial DUI of a bloody SCHOOL BUS?!?!?!?!?!?!
Under the prison ...
Hand him over to the parents
Leave it to the Daily Mail to screw up the headline as they usually do.
Britspeak.
You have to be pretty drunk to put 19 kids in a car.
I’d say the headline writer over at the Daily Mail has had a pint or two too many ...
All true. But an experienced alcoholic should have no problem with the blood levels quoted.
99 bottles of beer on a bus,
99 bottles of beer ...
and if one of those bottles happens to fall,
the bus turns into a car I would fear.
WV eases school bus driver application requirements as staffing shortages persist
Wanna bet this isn't the perp's first DUI...
What did the district know and when did it know it...
I should modify that, on the way up to the high, no problem. On the way down it’s a different matter.
There may be such a shortage they are forced to take willing applicants with DWI history. Perhaps the applicants state they are reformed alcoholics who are not longer currently drinking or planning to drink and they take their solemn word on that. My understanding is that North of 30% of all current school bus drivers quit and leave the field every year, setting up an ongoing and persistent bum’s rush effort to fill the drivers seats by nearly any means.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
“Leave it to the Daily Mail to screw up the headline as they usually do. Britspeak.”
I thought the same thing, however a bit of poking around reveals although this is infact a brit paper, the author of this story is an American......which means he or the or the editor or both are just plain ‘ol dumbasses.
The problem with being a bus driver is not driving the bus: it’s dealing with the passengers. School systems should be required to have a security officer of some kind on the bus, so that drivers can just drive.
“I’d say the headline writer over at the Daily Mail has had a pint or two too many ...”
How incompetent do you have to be to mess up a headline like that?
Maybe it was one of those clown cars they have at the circus.
“’Drunk’ West Virginia school bus driver Jeffrey Brannon, 54, flips car with 19 kids inside....”
What “CAR” can hold 19 kids?
I know that it was a school bus, but whoever wrote the headline didn’t.
