How 40Hz sensory gamma rhythm stimulation clears amyloid in Alzheimer's mice (Pulsing light and sound do clear brain waste)

Studies are producing mounting evidence that light flickering and sound clicking at the gamma brain rhythm frequency of 40 Hz can reduce Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression and treat symptoms in human volunteers as well as lab mice.

In a mouse model, researchers reveal a key mechanism that may contribute to these beneficial effects: clearance of amyloid proteins, a hallmark of AD pathology, via the brain's glymphatic system, a recently discovered "plumbing" network.

The paper describes a series of experiments showing that when sensory gamma stimulation increases 40 Hz power and synchrony in the brains of mice, that prompts a particular type of neuron to release peptides.

Working with mice which genetically model Alzheimer's, Murdock first replicated the lab's prior results that 40 Hz sensory stimulation increases 40 Hz neuronal activity in the brain and reduces amyloid levels.

They measured increases in cerebrospinal fluid in the brain tissue of mice treated with sensory gamma stimulation compared to untreated controls. They also measured an increase in the rate of interstitial fluid leaving the brain.

Moreover, in the gamma-treated mice he measured increased diameter of the lymphatic vessels that drain away the fluids and measured increased accumulation of amyloid in cervical lymph nodes.

The team focused on the aquaporin 4 (AQP4) water channel of astrocyte cells, which enables the cells to facilitate glymphatic fluid exchange.

In addition to the fluid exchange promoted by APQ4 activity in astrocytes, another mechanism by which gamma waves promote glymphatic flow is by increasing the pulsation of neighboring blood vessels. Several measurements showed stronger arterial pulsatility in mice subjected to sensory gamma stimulation.

The clearance effects shown in this study occurred rather rapidly but in lab experiments and clinical studies weeks or months of chronic sensory gamma stimulation have been needed to have sustained effects on cognition.

We have mechanisms that appear to simply be governed by rhythms via cycle per second. We can stimulate these “mechanical” functions by light and sound.

In this case, a variety of processes start up to clear amyloid proteins from the brain.

In a way, this makes sense, but I must say I am preconditioned to think nerves and processes are done by asynchronous chemical, cell, and electrical behaviors, and not something based on a beat (outside of our heart, for instance).

This is easy to utilize. Simple sound generators or light strobing functions are easy to make or find for your computer, or you can code this in just a few commands in a computer language of your choice

I need some of THIS.

I just purchased a red light heating belt 320 and 850 mhz or some such accepted setting with some other type of vibration they do With new LED tech. I got it to help with my lower back pain.

Will a good subWOOFer reproduce this? I have never had a use for one although having a useable component stereo system since around 1983. I might have a very good use for it now and my neighbors should appreciate it as well but probably wont. Just like most all the records I play for them.(?)

The source article seems to be lacking any support for “gamma brain rhythm frequency of 40 Hz can reduce Alzheimer’s disease (AD) progression and treat symptoms in human volunteers”

I wonder if it’s anything more that a barely statically noticeable effect?

I’m wondering if there is a way to get this kind of exposure just going about one’s life.

I suspect going out into the woods and walking around does something similar.

Yup, a decent sub will reproduce a 40hz sound wave.

Just use your iPhone as a 40 hz frequency generator and connect it to your sound system.

You really feel it more than hear it.

The original papers for these came out years ago. Pretty simple to construct a controller for the lights and a 40 hz soundtrack can be downloaded in many places.

As I understand it a 40 hz gamma is from 40 hz difference between the tone in one ear versus the other ear. There are an infinite number of possibilities.

The link above is to the MIT tone used two years back by this study.
