Monster blizzard causes mayhem on the roads as California and Nevada are battered by 190 mph winds - with highways closed due to collisions
Daily Mail ^ | 3/03/24 | James Gordon

A powerful blizzard that a meteorologist described as being 'as bad as it gets' howled in the Sierra Nevada mountains with wind gusts as strong as 190mph in the Lake Tahoe region, closing a long stretch of Interstate 80 and a 75-mile section of U.S. 395 in Northern California, forcing ski resorts to shut down, leaving thousands of homes without power.

More than 10 feet of snow was expected at higher elevations creating a 'life-threatening concern' for residents near Lake Tahoe and blocking travel on the key east-west freeway.

Blizzard conditions along I-80 saw hundreds trapped in their vehicles overnight, California Highway Patrol officers said with an estimated 200 to 300 vehicles stuck and unable to move.

Vehicles including everything from passenger cars to big rigs remained snowed-in from 5pm on Friday until 2:30am on Saturday morning over Donner Summit.

Eventually, tow trucks managed to get everyone out with no injuries, nor any vehicles having to be abandoned.

Kyle Frankland, a veteran snow-plow driver, said several parts of his rig broke as he cleared wet snow underneath piles of powder.

'I've been in Truckee 44 years. This is a pretty good storm,' Frankland said. 'It's not record-breaking by any means, but it's a good storm.'

I-80 was just one of many roads and highways that experienced the wrath of the blizzard; a 75-mile stretch of U.S. 395, leading up to Mammoth Mountain ski resort, was also closed.

On Highway 50, between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, several collisions and car spin-outs left drivers stuck in another huge impasse.

The National Weather Service revealed that gusts reached a dramatic 190mph at an elevation of 8,700 feet in Palisades Tahoe.

'It's a blizzard,' Dubravka Tomasin, a resident of Truckee, California, for more than a decade said. 'It's pretty harrowing.'

>> 190 MPH.....don’t believe it...

Truth. It gets windy in those parts of CA, but not anywhere near 190MPH.

Agree. There wouldn’t be a tree standing if 190 MPH. It says gusts but strongest hurricanes aren’t 190 MPH.

Love the old truck driver. 10 feet of snow and 190 mile per hour winds. “Yeah, its a good storm. I’ve seen worse.”

My daughter is watching an eagle nest w/eggs in California and which ever bird was on the nest was having to hold onto the nest with their beak to keep from blowing away.

I do.

The National Weather Service revealed that gusts reached a dramatic 190mph at an elevation of 8,700 feet in Palisades Tahoe.

Mt. Washington in NH is 6,288.2 ft. And they've recorded gusts of 171 mph there in 2019. 190 mph gusts are certainly possible at 8700 ft.

Yep, I just looked it up and seems every year they get storms with 10 or more feet of snow. A few years ago it was dozens of feet after the towns got hit with storm after storm htere. I remember seeing videos of the massive snowblower trying to Clear the directs and driveways there, and seeing the snow literally up to and over the roofline. People were stranded in their homes for days in cases. Course they coulda walked out a second story window onto the snow, but if they sunk down, it woulda been a nightmare trying to get back out.

I’m sure the Sierras are beautiful and all, but the amount of snow they get there is jusy insane

Mount Washington had a recording of 231 mph in 1934. It’s possible in higher elevations.
