Researchers have found that 670 nanometers (nm) of red light stimulated energy production within mitochondria, leading to increased consumption of glucose. In particular, it led to a 27.7% reduction in blood glucose levels following glucose intake, and it reduced maximum glucose spiking by 7.5%.
Mitochondria provide energy for vital cellular processes, using oxygen and glucose to produce the energy-rich nucleoside adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Previous research has established that long-wavelength light between approximately 650–900 nm (spanning the visible through to the near-infrared range) can increase mitochondrial production of ATP which reduces blood glucose and also improves health/lifespan in animals.
To explore the impact of 670 nm red light on blood glucose, the researchers recruited 30 healthy participants, who were then randomized into two groups: 15 in the 670 nm red light group, and 15 in the placebo (no light) group.
Dr. Powner said, "Our study has shown that we can use a single, 15-minute exposure to red light to reduce blood sugar levels after eating. While this has only been done in healthy individuals in this paper, it has the potential to impact diabetes control going forward, as it could help to reduce potentially damaging glucose spikes in the body after meals."
Professor Jeffery said, "Sunlight has a balance between red and blue, but we now live in a world where blue light is dominant because although we do not see it, LED lights are dominant in blue and have almost no red in them. This reduces mitochondrial function and ATP production. Hence our internal environments are red-starved. Long-term exposure to blue light is potentially toxic without red. Blue light on its own impacts badly on physiology and can drive disrupted blood sugars that may in the long run contribute to diabetes and undermine health spans.

Straighten me out, please, if I am misunderstanding.
Spending 15 minutes outdoors in daylight would give one the “red light” advantages seen in thecstudy.
*the study
My chiropracter is a big believer in red light therapy. I just bough a suction device like Chinese cupping glasses that has a red light built in. I dont think you can take full spectrum light for as long as the red light therapy.
27% is a lot!
Seemingly, being naked outside with full sun should do something similar, it would appear.
Those frequencies are present in what sunlight provides.
You can use the red light therapy longer than you can stay in the sunshine. Its more focused and not over such a large area. Its a pain reliever that works.
Isn’t that more infrared than red?
Ask Roxanne
Is this any red light or a special one?
I have a red plant grow light that’s always on.
“Isn’t that more infrared than red?”
The one I bought has both. It cost about forty dollars.
“Amazon? Please. Go to the source.”
Well, yes, but I wanted to see what a smaller bulb would do.
So I just stand or sit in front of these 670nm lights for 15 minutes?
I can buy LED tape in that wavelength. I also have bulbs that are RGB adjustable and can tune them to red.
As a matter of fact, I have an original Spectro-Chrome projector stashed away in my garage. The article you posted brought it to mind.
I bought it at an estate auction years ago because it was weird and I thought it might have value to a collector of quack devices. I never did anything with it though.
Maybe it’s time to take another look.
It wouldn’t be the first time “medical science” was wrong.
Bttt
And the infrared in it is what penetrates deeper, to the muscles.
Good one!
Mea culpa...I’ve been looking at smaller incandescent bulbs myself.
Light for about $29
"The RubyLux NIR-A Near Infrared Bulb is a human-grade, premium incandescent near infrared light therapy bulb designed for near infrared heat lamp therapy. The RubyLux emits renewing, healing infrared light in the red and near infrared wavelengths associated with pain relief, increased circulation, faster recovery times, collagen production, rejuvenation and renewal and peaks at 850nm. At 4 inches’ distance, it emits 1,431 mW/cm2. This bulb is an excellent choice for pain, regeneration and rejuvenation."
Buy a painters light to put your bulb in and clamp it to something. $15.98
