In a terrible case of mistaken identity, KGW found PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver allowed a family to pull the plug on the wrong man.
The family of a Vancouver man faced a heavy decision after an unexpected phone call in the middle of the night. Their loved one was on life support, hospital staff told them, after a horrible choking incident.
“They said, 'He’s basically brain dead,'” explained Debbie Danielson. “'Do you want us to keep him on life support or do you want to pull the plug?'”
After a brief discussion with her husband, Danielson told the hospital to pull her 60-year-old brother off life support.
“Michael A. Beehler, 60, Vancouver, died August 9, 2021,” read a death notice posted in The Columbian newspaper.
Then came the phone call no one expected. It was her brother, Mike. He wasn’t dead. Instead, he was very much alive.

It’s in the U.S., not Canada.
All sorts of irresistible opportunities for double billing here.
“Is this Hillary Clinton? Good. We have a Republican in critical condition. Do you want us to pull the plug?”
I'm curious, has Traitor Joe made any trips to Canada?
Are two good enough or do you need more?
horrible mistake though....but if pro basketball players can miss free throws all the time, then regular humans can make mistakes too, at a penny for the dollar in pay....
what surprises me most is the sister of the man making a decision of that magnitude in a few seconds....I would at least want to see my brother in real life before his demise...
Well, there are two issues I can see here:
1. The poor fellow they pulled the plug on was brain dead. Yes, they didn’t have permission, and the family should have made the decision, but they may also have elected to pull the plug, anyway. So it’s not like some guy came into for a routine operation and the next thing is they’re carting him off to the morgue. “I’m not dead yet!”
2. Secondly, I’d guess the brother was pretty ticked off. “Wait a minute- you told them to pull the plug on me?”
Thank Ted Kennedy for all the major changes in health care, all of which were designed to force Single Payer gubmint health care.
Due to the flippant attitudes of some lower level medical personnel, I double check everything. I’ve even had my own primary doctor respond to me saying: “They told you what??”
“ Vancouver, WA... Across the river from Portland, OR.”
More crazy people than any where else in the US!
Those people are insane!
Must be something in the soil.
They never visited him, but the hospital is ok doing all of this over the phone?
“He fell over a chair,” said Beehler. “I thought he was dead then.”
It wasn’t until Beehler made that unexpected call to his sister a week later, concerned because his cell phone account had been shut down...
He was worried about his cell phone account, but didn't bother to call the hospital a week earlier when his friend almost died in his apartment...or get in touch with the guy's family?!
This one's a stinker.
As a result of the case, the Clark County Medical Examiner’s office changed its internal policy, according to a county spokesperson. It now requires funeral homes, health care facilities or other providers requesting death certification to have family members identify their loved ones. If family identification isn’t possible, the decedent is brought to the medical examiner’s office for other forms of identification, including fingerprinting.
So the reader is being asked to believe the requirement that family members identify loved ones who have passed isn't already standard operating procedure in just about every jurisdiction in the U.S.
Really?
Thank you. It’s not that I didn’t believe you, but I want to have that when I talk to some people.
I understand.
The story of higher priced Healthcare has many players but lets start with Medicare Lyndon Baines Johnson.
POTUS Kennedy gunned down and the New Dealer LBJ picking up where FDR left off.
The doctors warned against Medicare they gave it to us anyway Democrats and Liberal Republicans in 1965.
That was the beginning.
Hillary in the 1990’s pushed hospitals into mergers as she advanced her agenda.
And Medicare got bigger thanks to George W Bush he sure wasn’t a Kennedy with Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Coverage.
Theres got to be more to this ...
My grandson was on life support and his parents had to sign forms to pull the plug...
Also we were all there in the room for the last hour or 2 of his short sweet life...
Its been 15+ years but just writing about it has brought tears to my eyes...
he was just 3 months old and looked just like his Daddy...
I cant imagine a hospital not expecting the family to go to the bedside of their loved one..
How can a phone call be normal practice for a hospital ???
But at least their decision was carbon neutral...
