Tucker Carlson mocked for bewilderment over Russian shopping carts that include common feature
Mirror UK ^ | 2/16/2024 | Yelena Mandenberg

Tucker Carlson aired a video of him at a Russian grocery store, appearing to fawn over everything from the shopping cart mechanism to the price of groceries - skipping over the part where US dollars stretch a lot farther than the ruble.

In the video, Carlson was amazed to see that the shopping carts in front of the supermarket required people to put in a ruble coin, which they'd then get back when the cart was returned.

Carlson acted like he'd never seen this feature before - despite it being pretty common across the US and most of Europe.

He then explained to his audience how it works, quipping, "There's an incentive to return it... and not just take it to your homeless encampment."

He was quickly criticized for the comment about the shopping carts, and users on X made fun of him for looking like he'd never been in a store before.

It’s probably been 20 years since he was last in a supermarket. He probably gets everything delivered to his house.

The only store I know of that does this in the U.S. is Aldi’s.

I would not describe it as “common” though I agree he overhyped it. He also seemed amazed that food in poor countries is cheaper than in the US. He should ask the cashiers how long they work per day and what their salaries are before spending too much time talking about affordability.

“despite it being pretty common across the US “

No. It is not common.

Same here. I have visited an Aldi’s exactly once. So, despite what this “journalist” says, this is not a common feature.

Common practice in the UK maybe, but not in the US.

I’ve never seen it in my almost 80 years. And I do the shopping.

Aldi. We do this all the time in Ohio.

And why do these sites make it literally impossible to read their articles due to being blasted with constant ads and videos. I get having ads. But why would you want your site to be “unbrowseable”?

Aldi’s recently bought Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s, so it is likely to become more common. OTOH, practically every time I have been to the local Aldi’s, shoppers leaving the store simply hand over their cart to a shopper entering, to avoid the middleman.

No. It is not common.

Sure it is. Bet I have at least 10 Aldi locations within an hour of me in Ohio. There are 2362 locations nationwide so about 45/state. I’d call that “pretty common”.

One more thing. This is similar to when GHWB was surprised at the scanners at a grocery store, which the MSM loved because they could make him look out of touch with the little man, unlike BJ Clinton, who was and still is more out of touch.

Only nine locations in DE. But they’re decent stores. Round our parts (OH has like 160) they have the fastest cashiers of anyone. If you have one close, check them out.
