Aldi’s recently bought Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s, so it is likely to become more common. OTOH, practically every time I have been to the local Aldi’s, shoppers leaving the store simply hand over their cart to a shopper entering, to avoid the middleman.

I’ve seen beggars offer to return carts in return for the quarter.
We always keep one quarter in our car in case we need to stop off at Aldi.
