Nearly 10,000 drivers caught on camera illegally passing school buses in Bridgeport: officials

The City of Bridgeport released data Thursday on the shocking number of drivers caught on camera illegally passing stopped school buses in the city since the beginning of the school year.

From Sept. 3, 2023 to Feb. 3, 2024, nearly 10,000 motorists passed school buses that were stopped with lights flashing, according to Bridgeport officials.

The incidents were captured by cameras on the school buses. The city released video of some of the incidents.

β€œIt is unacceptable that there are motorists who are blatantly putting our children in danger by illegally passing stopped school buses," Mayor Joseph Ganim said in a statement. "We will take the necessary steps to crack down on these violations to ensure that our children are not being threatened by the carelessness of drivers while school buses are making their pickup and drop-off routes.”

In all, cameras on 74 buses captured 9,860 incidents of drivers illegally passing school buses, according to Bridgeport officials. That breaks down to 75 violations per weekday, city officials said.

The bus stop with the highest number of violations was the 100 block of Logan Street with 1,671 violations, according to the data. That is almost three times as many violations as the next highest stop in the 100 block of Davenport Street.

“Illegal passing” is such harsh language. It needs to be called “undocumented passing.”

β€œIn my neck of the woods _all_ traffic laws are considered suggestions. ”

I recall being at a large four-way intersection in Mexico City where cars were oozing out of twelve lanes into the center from every direction, despite the lights and a uniformed cop with a pump shotgun slung over his shoulder standing in the middle of it all trying ineffectually to control the chaos.

I see more and more drivers not yielding to emergency vehicles with lights and sirens (police, fire and ambulances). And if they do, they pull out and fall in line right behind them to gain spots in traffic. Idiots abound...

License plate cams on buses. Make them pay

Said payment goes directly to the school budget.

Up front, I believe this should be harshly prosecuted (passing of stopped school buses) for OBVIOUS reasons. So I am not supporting anyone passing a stopped bus, just to be clear. I don’t do it, and I don’t think others should either.

But...what is it now with busses stopping every 100 feet in front of every damn house? And if the kid isn’t there, they wait. What is with that?

I know there are people who will say “BUT THERE ARE NO SIDEWALKS, BLAH BLAH BLAH!”

This is in places with sidewalks. What happened to having kids walk 50 to 100 yards to congregate somewhere and wait for a bus, instead of stopping every 100 feet???

Here when the school zone flashing lights say 15 MPH, everyone slows down to 15 MPH.

We, and the local constabulary, take child safety VERY seriously indeed.

The police need to throw out spike strips in front of the cars who illegally pass school buses.

See how far they get on four flat tires.

There’s an elementary school not far from where I live. When I’m out walking in the mornings, I see kids waiting for the bus less than 400 yards from the school, and there’s a sidewalk the whole way. They wait longer for the bus than it would take to walk.

There are also cars lined up for blocks to drop kids off, mostly SUVs and pickups, and nearly every one idling. It’s just ridiculous.

Similar here ... northern Indiana woman speeding in dense fog said she didn’t see all the lights, hit 3 kids from the same family and killed all of them.

agree. the school busses can drop a kid off wherever the parents request, so if it is on a 4 lane highway, they stop, traffic in both directions so some high school kid can get off where mommy works.
i get it for the littles but if you are old enough to drive a car, you should know how to cross the street by now.
don’t get me started with the chatty mommy and bus drivers either.

If the fog is so dense that a person cannot see a big yellow school bus with flashing strobe lights and flashing side red lights then that person should be driving about 3 miles an hour, if at all.

We live in a small neighborhood composed of three cul-de-sacs which all which meet up. A total of about 55 houses. The school bus stops four times in this neighborhood. Four times. Every kid in the neighborhood could walk 50 yards on sidewalks to a single location to be picked up. Yeah like that’s going to happen.

Nevertheless as ludicrous as the school bus system is when the bus is stopped and lights are flashing there are children getting off or on. And zooming past that is negligent homicide.

You did read my post didn’t you, where I said I fully support prosecuting that to the full extent of the law, right?
