It would appear best to have alcohol at least several hours before going to bed, rather than an hour or two before sleeping.

Probably not a good idea to watch the news before bed because that can make one want a sedative like wine.
To: ConservativeMind
I know a single beer even six hours before bed makes my sleep much less restful. Two beers wrecks it.

Thirty drinks before going to bed can help you sleep through the weekend.

This has been known for a long time. Many types of sedatives also alter sleep cycles.

I haven’t had two hours of REM sleep in ages. I’m always half aware and half awake. I hear every acorn that hits the roof and every howl of a coyote out in the woods. I know that is why I’m so tired all the time.

Study shows a drink before bed can cause reductions in REM sleepHasn't this been widely known within the scientific sleep-study community for the last 50 years or so?

This past Wednesday, I celebrated 20 years of sobriety after a pretty intense drinking career. Early on in sobriety, I had some pretty vivid and intense dreams and it occurred to me that during my drinking years, I didn’t recall any dreams. Sobriety quite literally gave me back my dreams.
To: ConservativeMind
When I stopped drinking several 5 years ago, I was shocked at the improved quality of my sleep. It was DEEP. And the dreams were incredibly vivid.
I can only surmise that my body and mind were making up for years of bad sleep due to too much alcohol.
Now I sleep deeply, wake up rested, and feel great all the time.

I’m glad we have a study that tells us what most people have known for many years. You have more restful sleep if all the alcohol in your system is completely processed before going to sleep.

I don’t drink alcoholic beverages as a rule anyway, but yeah, even when I tried that it never worked for me. Made sleeping even harder.

There are those who prefer rum sleep to REM sleep.
To: ConservativeMind
The only time I drink is with a wee dram in my coffee first thing in the morning if its cold , during the winter only.
The Scots did that for a thousand years, only straight, thats why the gaelic for whisky is “water of life.”
But we know why Joe and Hitlery always are so tired.
